Microsoft's cloud folder client. The process is OneDrive.exe. Known Folder Move can take over Documents, Desktop, and Pictures. It is not Dropbox and not the 365 suite page.

OneDrive syncs a Microsoft account folder. Known Folder Move can own Documents.
OneDrive.exe copies files between this PC and OneDrive in the Microsoft account or work tenant. It is not Dropbox.exe and not the Microsoft 365 installer. Files On-Demand placeholders can wake the client when Explorer opens a file.

What is Microsoft OneDrive?
Microsoft OneDrive is the Microsoft cloud sync client. Current Windows often installs OneDrive.exe with the user profile. It is not Dropbox, not Google Drive, and not the Microsoft 365 suite article.
If you have never used it
If a Microsoft or work sign-in offered to "back up" Documents, that is OneDrive Known Folder Move, not Dropbox. You can use onedrive.com in a browser without the tray app. The Windows client is for Explorer sync and placeholders. Install or repair it from Microsoft's OneDrive download. Two clouds on the same Documents tree is how disks stay busy.

A OneDrive folder that mirrors the Microsoft cloud. OneDrive.exe is the worker.
Online-only placeholders in Explorer. Opening one hydrates the file.
Optional backup of Documents, Desktop, and Pictures into OneDrive. Dropbox does not do this Microsoft folder redirect.

Current status
Actively developed. This article is the Windows desktop client, not OneDrive on the web alone.
How old is it?
The service began as Windows Live Folders / SkyDrive in 2007 and was renamed OneDrive in 2014. It is not a new app. Dropbox launched later on the same idea with a different client.

Startup components
OneDrive often starts with Windows from its own setting. That is the tray, not a Windows service you disable in services.msc as a first step.

Common problems
Documents vanished from the old path
Known Folder Move redirected the shell folders. Look under OneDrive\Documents before you restore from a backup.
Two sync clients on one tree
OneDrive plus Dropbox on Documents double-writes. Move one root.
Getting unstuck
Pause sync from the tray before you debug Explorer
The overlay rides explorer.exe. The worker is still OneDrive.exe.
Unlink the PC in OneDrive settings if you want the folder local-only
Uninstalling the exe by hand leaves a broken stub. Unlink first.
Install from Microsoft's OneDrive download
A "OneDrive sync tool" from a search ad is the wrong file.
Alternatives
Dropbox, Google Drive, and a mapped share overlap. Pick them for the account you already have. They will not honor OneDrive Known Folder Move.

Related hardware
An SSD makes first sync and Files On-Demand hurt less. A spinning disk plus Known Folder Move is the worst case.
