Microsoft 365
Also called office 365, microsoft office, m365
The subscription name for current Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and OneDrive on many PCs.
What you need to know
Microsoft 365 is a suite, not one process.
Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and OneDrive are separate executables. People search the suite name when a machine feels slow after a workday of meetings and mail.

What is Microsoft 365?
Microsoft 365 is the current branding for Microsoft's productivity apps and cloud services. On a PC you still launch Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams as separate programs.
If you have never used it
If a work or school email told you to "install Office", this is usually the suite. Microsoft 365 is the subscription name. Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and OneDrive are the programs you actually click. Download from your Microsoft account or from office.com, not from a "Office 2024 crack" page. A perpetual Office 2021 box is a cousin, not this article's main story.
What is it used for?
Word and Excel. These are still separate windows and separate exe files.
Outlook on many PCs. New Outlook and classic Outlook are different clients.
Teams for work video. That load is Teams, not WINWORD sitting idle.
Who is it for?
- Work and school accounts
- Home users who subscribe for Word and OneDrive
- People who still say Office when they mean this suite
Current status
Actively developed. Channel names include Current Channel and Monthly Enterprise Channel.
How old is it?
Desktop Office dates to 1990. The subscription brand started as Office 365 in 2011 and was renamed Microsoft 365 in 2020. Click-to-Run Office16 folders still hold current apps. A 2003 .doc-only machine is a different era and a different installer.
Versions
Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.
System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per Microsoft |
Resource profile
- CPU demand
- Low for a simple document. High for Teams video

- Outlook and Teams can stay large
- Network demand

Common problems
PC feels slow after work
Quit Teams and Outlook from the tray. That is a better first step than disabling Windows Update.
OneDrive disk use
A large first sync is expected. See the OneDrive article.
Getting unstuck
Name the exe
Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and OneDrive fail in different ways. "Office is slow" is not a diagnosis.
Repair Click-to-Run
Settings > Apps > Microsoft 365 > Modify > Quick Repair. Office.com is the download if the suite is missing.
Check the account, not only the disk
A home install wants a Microsoft account. Work installs want the tenant admin. Those are different sign-in screens.
Alternatives
Google Workspace, LibreOffice, and Apple iWork cover overlapping documents. They do not replace a work tenant you do not control.

Related hardware
A 12th-gen desktop CPU still runs this suite well if RAM and storage keep up. Teams video is the usual hardware stress, not Word.
