OneDrive.exe
Also called onedrive, microsoft onedrive
The Microsoft OneDrive sync client. It keeps files in the OneDrive folder in step with the cloud.
What you need to know
This is OneDrive sync, not a mystery system file.
OneDrive.exe copies files between this PC and your Microsoft account. High disk after you drop a large folder in OneDrive is expected.
- Windows process?
- No. This is the sync app
- High disk normal?
- During a big sync, yes
- Can I quit it?
- Yes. Files stop syncing until it returns
What is OneDrive.exe?
OneDrive.exe is the OneDrive sync client. Current Windows often installs it with the user profile.
What does it do?
It uploads and downloads files in the OneDrive folder, and it can hydrate Files On-Demand placeholders.
Why is it running?
You signed into OneDrive, or Windows set it up with your Microsoft account.
Is it safe?
Usually safe if the path is OneDrive
The legitimate client lives under AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive. A random OneDrive.exe elsewhere is not that client.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe
- Expected publisher: Microsoft Corporation
Can I end it?
Pause or quit OneDrive
You can quit OneDrive from the tray. Files will not sync until it runs again. Ending it mid-sync can leave a file half-updated.
Can I remove it?
Unlink or uninstall, do not delete the exe
Unlink the PC in OneDrive settings if you want to stop sync. Deleting the exe leaves a broken stub.
Should it start with Windows?
OneDrive often starts with Windows. That is a OneDrive setting. Turn it off there if you do not want sync at sign-in.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Can rise while hashing a large add
- Memory
- Moderate
- Disk
- High during first sync or a big copy
- Network
- Active while uploading or downloading

| Executable name | OneDrive.exe |
|---|---|
| Common legitimate path | C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Signature expectation | Signed by Microsoft Windows |
Common problems
Stuck on "processing"
A huge folder or a path that is too long can stall sync. Pause, then look at the OneDrive activity list.
High disk on an HDD
Files On-Demand still touches the disk. An SSD feels this less.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Confirm the path and signature
Open the process properties and check that OneDrive.exe runs from the expected folder and is signed by the expected publisher. This is the first check, not a Registry edit.
See what the process is doing
Task Manager can show CPU, memory, disk, and GPU. High use during an obvious job is often normal. High use when the PC is idle needs a closer look at the related app or service.
Avoid destructive first steps
Do not delete OneDrive.exe, disable critical services without knowing the effect, or edit the Registry as the first move.
