Microsoft Excel
Also called excel, ms excel, xlsx
The Microsoft spreadsheet app. On Windows the process is EXCEL.EXE. Power Query and large workbooks are why this process grows. It is not Google Sheets and not the 365 suite page.
What you need to know
Excel is EXCEL.EXE. Sheets in a browser are not this process.
Microsoft Excel calculates workbooks. Power Query, PivotTables, and a million-row sheet are why EXCEL.EXE uses more RAM than Word on the same PC. The Microsoft 365 page does not explain a single book.

What is Microsoft Excel?
Microsoft Excel is the spreadsheet in Office and Microsoft 365. The Windows executable is EXCEL.EXE. Access databases and Power BI Desktop are different products even when they share data.
If you have never used it
If you have a budget, a grade book, or a CSV to sort, this is desktop Excel, not Google Sheets in a browser and not the Microsoft 365 suite article. Install it with Office or Microsoft 365. You open .xlsx files in EXCEL.EXE. A Sheet shared only as a Google link will not calculate the same way here.
What is it used for?
Grid calc, charts, and .xlsx. Word can embed a table. It cannot replace this calc engine.
Refresh from files, databases, and the web. This is a common reason EXCEL.EXE stays large.
Open exports from banks and tools. Encoding and column types still surprise people.
Who is it for?
- Finance, ops, and anyone living in workbooks
- People whose "Excel is slow" is one book, not the whole 365 suite
- Users comparing desktop Excel with Google Sheets
Current status
Actively developed. This article is desktop Excel on Windows, not Excel for the web and not Excel Mobile.
How old is it?
Excel launched on the Mac in 1985 and on Windows in 1987. It replaced Microsoft Multiplan in that line. Current Excel still uses EXCEL.EXE. Lotus 1-2-3 is the historical rival, not Google Sheets.

Common problems
One book makes the PC feel broken
Disable automatic calc or split the file before you repair all of Office.
People blame Word for a sheet that will not calc
WINWORD does not run Excel formulas. Check EXCEL.EXE and the add-in list.
Getting unstuck
Test excel /safe
That skips Excel add-ins. It is not the same switch as winword /safe and it is not Windows Safe Mode.
Watch Power Query refresh before you kill the process
A long refresh is Excel working. Ending EXCEL.EXE mid-refresh can corrupt the cache.
Repair Microsoft 365 Apps if Excel will not launch
Do not download excel.exe from a macro-phishing zip or a filename mill.
Alternatives
Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, and Power BI Desktop overlap. Sheets is a browser grid. Power BI is for published reports, not every workbook.

Related hardware
RAM and an SSD matter more than a famous CPU name once books get large. A GPU does not fix a 20-sheet Power Query refresh.
