EXCEL.EXE
Also called excel, microsoft excel
Microsoft Excel. Calculation threads and Power Query can keep EXCEL.EXE busy after the grid looks idle.
What you need to know
This is Excel. Recalc and Power Query are why a quiet-looking workbook still burns a core.
EXCEL.EXE is Microsoft Excel. Manual calc, volatile functions, and Power Query refreshes are Excel-specific reasons for CPU. Word does not have a calculation engine like this.
- Safe?
- Yes, from Office
- High CPU on a "simple" sheet?
- Volatile formulas or Power Query
- Same as WINWORD?
- No. Different Office app
What is EXCEL.EXE?
EXCEL.EXE is Microsoft Excel. Click-to-Run places it next to WINWORD.EXE. The image name matches the product, unlike Word.
What does it do?
It calculates workbooks, runs VBA, and can keep Power Query or Power Pivot work in-process. Multiple EXCEL.EXE rows can be separate instances if you launched them that way.
Why is it running?
A workbook is open, a DDE launch from another app started Excel, or a preview handler opened a sheet.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
Office16\EXCEL.EXE signed by Microsoft is Excel. excel.exe in a macro-phishing zip is the attachment, not Office.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\EXCEL.EXE
- Office Click-to-Run path
- Calculation threads are still this image
- Add-ins and COM can hang it
Can I end it?
You lose unsaved workbooks
Ending EXCEL.EXE drops unsaved books. Recovery may help. Cancel a Power Query refresh before you kill the process if the UI still responds.
Can I remove it?
Uninstall Office
Do not delete EXCEL.EXE. Repair or uninstall Microsoft 365 Apps.
Should it start with Windows?
Excel should not start at logon unless a file or a shortcut says so.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Recalc, Power Query, and Analysis ToolPak
- Memory
- 64-bit Excel helps huge books. 32-bit hits a wall
- Disk
- AutoRecover and temp
- Network
- Workbooks on SharePoint

Common problems
Calculating in the status bar
That is Excel doing math. SysMain and Defender are different rows. Pause recalc or move volatile formulas.
Two Excels
DDE versus a second instance is an Office launch setting, not a duplicate install.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
excel /safe for add-ins
Same idea as Word, different exe. If Safe Mode is quiet, disable COM add-ins.
Check 32-bit versus 64-bit Office
A 2 GB sheet in 32-bit Excel is a product-bitness problem, not a Windows process problem.
