Microsoft Word. The image name is WINWORD.EXE, not word.exe. That mismatch is why people think a second Word is malware.

What you need to know

Word is WINWORD.EXE. word.exe is not the official image name.

WINWORD.EXE is Microsoft Word. The historic name predates Word for Windows branding. A file named word.exe in Downloads is not this program.

If someone says Word is missing because they cannot find word.exe, I would show them WINWORD.EXE. The filename is older than the Start menu name.

What is WINWORD.EXE?

WINWORD.EXE is Microsoft Word. Click-to-Run places it under Microsoft Office\root\Office16. The friendly name in Task Manager is Microsoft Word.

What does it do?

It loads documents, COM add-ins, and can start a second instance for a dialog. It is not the Word Web app in Edge.

Why is it running?

You opened a document or a mail attachment invoked Word. Explorer preview can also start WINWORD as a preview handler.

Is it safe?

Usually safe

Office16\WINWORD.EXE signed by Microsoft is Word. word.exe or WINWORD.EXE in Temp is the case to inspect.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\WINWORD.EXE

Can I end it?

You lose unsaved documents

Ending WINWORD.EXE drops unsaved buffers. Word Document Recovery may offer a copy after. End it only if Not Responding lasts.

Can I remove it?

Uninstall Office

Do not delete WINWORD.EXE. Use Microsoft 365 Apps uninstall.

Should it start with Windows?

Word should not silently start unless a file or a preview opened it. A Startup shortcut to WINWORD is a user choice.

Hidden Word from preview

A File Explorer preview can leave WINWORD running. Close the preview pane as a test.

Font driver overlap

Office Safe Mode is the add-in test. It is not Windows Safe Mode.

Repair Office from Settings > Apps

Do not download WINWORD.EXE from a filename site.
