ONENOTE.EXE
Also called onenote, desktop onenote, onenote 2016
Desktop OneNote from Microsoft 365 or Office. It is not Word (WINWORD.EXE) and it is not OneNoteM.exe.
What you need to know
ONENOTE is OneNote, not WINWORD and not OneNoteM.
ONENOTE.EXE is the Win32 desktop OneNote client. WINWORD.EXE is Word. OneNoteM.exe is a different OneNote image Microsoft ships beside it. Ending this process drops unsaved notes in this client only.
- Safe?
- Yes, from Office
- Same as Word?
- No. Word is WINWORD.EXE
- Same as OneNoteM?
- No. That is another OneNote image
What is ONENOTE.EXE?
ONENOTE.EXE is desktop OneNote. It is not WINWORD.EXE and it is not OneNoteM.exe. Click-to-Run places the classic client under Office16.
What does it do?
It syncs notebooks and hosts add-ins for this desktop build. Word does not store those sections. OneNoteM.exe is a separate OneNote host when that build is installed.
Why is it running?
You opened a notebook, a .one file, or an Office installer still registered this client. A second OneNote tile may start OneNoteM instead.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
Office16\ONENOTE.EXE signed by Microsoft is desktop OneNote. onenote.exe in a zip is not. OneNoteM.exe is still a different image.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\ONENOTE.EXE
- Desktop OneNote
- Not WINWORD.EXE
- Not OneNoteM.exe
Can I end it?
You lose unsaved notes in this client
Ending ONENOTE.EXE closes desktop OneNote. Word stays. OneNoteM.exe can stay if that other client is open.
Can I remove it?
Uninstall or change Office apps
Do not delete ONENOTE.EXE. Use Microsoft 365 Apps setup to remove OneNote. That is not a Word uninstall by itself.
Should it start with Windows?
On demand unless Send to OneNote or a Startup shortcut starts it.
