Dropbox.exe
Also called dropbox
Dropbox's sync client. Explorer overlays and a tray helper are Dropbox. OneDrive is a different vendor and a different exe.
What you need to know
This is Dropbox sync. OneDrive.exe is Microsoft and a different path.
Dropbox.exe is the Dropbox client. High disk after you dump a folder in is the sync. Explorer.exe can look busy because of overlay icons, but the worker is Dropbox.
- Safe?
- Yes, from Dropbox
- High disk?
- A first sync or a huge diff
- Same as OneDrive?
- No
What is Dropbox.exe?
Dropbox.exe is the Dropbox desktop sync app. It watches a folder, talks to Dropbox servers, and draws Explorer overlays through a shell extension.
What does it do?
It uploads and downloads. Smart Sync / on-demand files can wake it when Explorer opens a placeholder. That is Dropbox, not WSearch.
Why is it running?
You installed Dropbox and signed in. A Dropbox.exe that starts at logon is the client tray, which Dropbox documents as optional.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
A signed Dropbox, Inc. binary under AppData\Roaming\Dropbox or Program Files is the client. Dropbox.exe from a coupon email is not.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\Dropbox\bin\Dropbox.exe
- Path can vary by installer
- Publisher: Dropbox, Inc.
- OneDrive is a different exe
Can I end it?
Pauses sync
Ending Dropbox.exe stops sync until it starts again. Files already on disk stay. Conflicts can pile up if another machine keeps writing.
Can I remove it?
Uninstall Dropbox
Use the Dropbox uninstaller. Deleting the exe leaves the shell extension until you reboot and clean Apps.
Should it start with Windows?
Dropbox has its own Start Dropbox on system startup checkbox. Startup Apps should match that.

Common problems
Two clouds, one folder
Dropbox plus OneDrive on the same tree double-writes. That is a layout problem, not a Windows bug.
Overlay icons slow Explorer
The shell extension rides explorer.exe. Dropbox still owns the worker.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Pause sync in the tray as a test
If disk falls, you found the writer. Then exclude huge caches from the Dropbox folder.
Do not delete the Dropbox folder to "clear RAM"
That is your files.
