explorer.exe
Also called explorer, windows explorer, file explorer
Windows Explorer. It is the taskbar, Start menu host surface, and File Explorer windows.
What you need to know
This is the Windows desktop shell, not a leftover installer.
explorer.exe draws the taskbar and File Explorer. Restarting it can recover a frozen taskbar. Deleting it is not a cleanup.
- Safe?
- Yes, if it is in System32
- Can I restart it?
- Yes, to recover the taskbar
- Should I delete it?
- No
What is explorer.exe?
explorer.exe is the Windows shell. It hosts the taskbar, desktop icons, and File Explorer windows.
What does it do?
It shows folders, launches apps from the taskbar, and keeps the desktop interactive. Extra explorer.exe copies often mean extra folder windows.
Why is it running?
It starts when you sign in. Without it you lose the normal taskbar and desktop.
Why are there multiple copies?
One copy is the desktop shell. More copies often appear when File Explorer windows are open.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
The legitimate shell is in System32. An explorer.exe in a temp folder is not the Windows shell.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Windows\System32\explorer.exe
- Expected publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- Expected path: System32
Can I end it?
Restart is OK. Ending forever is not.
You can restart Explorer to recover a stuck taskbar. Ending it and leaving it off hides the desktop shell until it starts again.
Can I remove it?
No
Do not delete explorer.exe. Windows needs it for the desktop you use every day.
Should it start with Windows?
Explorer starts with your sign-in. That is expected. It is not a third-party startup leftover.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Usually low. Folder thumbnails and a broken preview handler can raise it
- Memory
- Grows with open windows and shell extensions
- Disk
- Can rise while enumerating a huge folder
- Network
- Used when a folder is on the network

Common problems
Frozen taskbar
Restarting Explorer from Task Manager is a common recovery. It is safer than a full reboot for a stuck shell.
High CPU in a folder
A preview handler or a cloud-sync overlay can make a folder expensive. Try a simple folder before you blame the shell itself.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Confirm the path and signature
Open the process properties and check that explorer.exe runs from the expected folder and is signed by the expected publisher. This is the first check, not a Registry edit.
See what the process is doing
Task Manager can show CPU, memory, disk, and GPU. High use during an obvious job is often normal. High use when the PC is idle needs a closer look at the related app or service.
Avoid destructive first steps
Do not delete explorer.exe, disable critical services without knowing the effect, or edit the Registry as the first move.
