ZoneAlarm
Also called zone alarm, checkpoint zonealarm, zatray
An old consumer firewall brand Check Point still sells. The tray is zatray.exe. It is not Windows Firewall.
What you need to know
zatray.exe is ZoneAlarm. Windows Firewall is the in-box page.
ZoneAlarm is Check Point's consumer firewall. Two firewalls with Windows Firewall is the usual pain. An AV SKU plus live Defender is the two-engine case. GlassWire is a newer graph with an optional firewall.

What is ZoneAlarm?
ZoneAlarm is a consumer firewall from Check Point. zatray.exe is the tray. Windows Firewall is the Microsoft feature.
If you have never used it
If you wanted the old ZoneAlarm firewall, this is that Check Point consumer brand, not Windows Firewall. Download it from zonealarm.com. zatray.exe is the tray. Windows Firewall is the in-box page in Windows Security. Two firewalls is the fight. Some ZoneAlarm SKUs add antivirus. That AV plus live Defender is the other fight.
What is it used for?
Program allow prompts are ZoneAlarm. Windows Firewall uses a different dialog in Windows Security.
Free is firewall-first. Paid SKUs can add AV. That AV should take Defender's slot if you enable it.
vsmon.exe and TrueVector are old ZA names. They are not MsMpEng.exe.
Who is it for?
- People who still want ZoneAlarm popups
- Users comparing this to Windows Firewall
- Anyone with zatray.exe plus a second AV
Current status
Still sold by Check Point. This article is the Windows consumer app.
How old is it?
Zone Labs shipped ZoneAlarm around 2000. Check Point bought it. Current storefronts still sell ZoneAlarm Free Firewall and paid bundles. A 2003 ZA popup screenshot is nostalgia, not proof the brand died.
Versions
Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.
System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum
| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11, per current ZoneAlarm support |
|---|---|
| RAM | Light firewall. Paid AV SKUs add resident cost |
Resource profile
- CPU demand
- Low for firewall. Higher if AV is on
- Network demand
- Rule updates

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.
| zatray.exe | ZoneAlarm tray. Not the Windows Firewall service |
|---|---|
| vsmon.exe | TrueVector / ZA monitor on many installs |
Startup components
zatray.exe starts with Windows while ZoneAlarm is installed.
File locations
| Typical install | C:\Program Files\CheckPoint\ZoneAlarm\ |

Common problems
Two firewalls
ZoneAlarm plus Windows Firewall can block the same app. Pick an owner in Windows Security and in ZA.
ZA antivirus plus live Defender
If you installed a ZA AV SKU, one engine should own realtime.
Getting unstuck
Install from zonealarm.com
A "ZoneAlarm 2005" archive is stale. Windows Security is Settings, not this download.
If you only wanted Windows Firewall, uninstall ZA
The in-box firewall is enough for many PCs.
Check Virus and threat protection if a ZA AV SKU is present
The owner should not list two live engines.
Alternatives
Windows Firewall in Windows Security. GlassWire if you wanted a graph. Comodo if you wanted HIPS popups.
