ShareX

ApplicationShareX Team

Also called share x, getsharex

ShareX TeamSystem

A powerful capture and upload tool. The process is ShareX.exe. It is not Snipping Tool.

What you need to know

ShareX is a power capture tool. Snipping Tool is the in-box app.

ShareX captures, annotates, and can upload. Get it from getsharex.com. It is not Snipping Tool and it is not Greenshot's smaller editor.

What is it?
A powerful screenshot and upload tool
Same as Snipping Tool?
No. Snipping Tool is the Windows app
Does it upload?
Only if you leave destinations on
Feex says
If Win+Shift+S is not enough, I would install ShareX from getsharex.com and set one hotkey. I would leave uploads off until you want them. Snipping Tool can stay for a quick markup.

What is ShareX?

ShareX captures the screen, records, and can upload. ShareX.exe stays in the tray. Snipping Tool is the Windows app behind Win+Shift+S markup. They are different products.

If you have never used it

If you want hotkeys, scrolling capture, and optional uploads, ShareX is the open-source tool from the ShareX Team. Download it from getsharex.com. It lives in the tray. It is not Snipping Tool, not Greenshot, and not Lightshot.

What is it used for?

Hotkey capture and scrolling capture

Region, window, and scrolling pages. Snipping Tool does not match this hotkey set.

After-capture editor and workflows

Annotate, then copy, save, or run a workflow. Greenshot is a simpler annotator.

Optional upload destinations

You choose if and where to upload. Lightshot's prntscr path is a different default caution.

Who is it for?

  • People who outgrew Snipping Tool
  • Anyone who wants capture workflows
  • Users who should turn off upload if they only want a local PNG

Current status

ShareX (2007) is a current screenshot and capture from ShareX Team. The vendor still points Windows users at https://getsharex.com/.

How old is it?

The project started in 2007 as ZScreen and became ShareX. Snipping Tool is older as an in-box name and was rebuilt for Windows 11. ShareX is still the power-user extra you install yourself.

ShareX is meant to start with Windows so hotkeys work. Turn that off in Application settings if you do not want the tray.

Common problems

A capture uploaded when you meant to copy

Check after-capture tasks. ShareX can upload. Snipping Tool stays local unless you share from its UI.

Hotkey fights with Win+Shift+S

Change the ShareX hotkey or leave Snipping Tool as the Windows shortcut.

Getting unstuck

Install from getsharex.com or the GitHub releases they link

A "ShareX Pro" host is not the team. Snipping Tool is already on Windows 11 if you only needed a simple snip.

Open Hotkey settings and After capture tasks first

Those two pages decide what happens on print screen. Greenshot has a simpler after-capture menu.

Turn off destinations if you only want the clipboard

ShareX is powerful because it can upload. That is optional. Lightshot's upload caution is a different app.

Alternatives

Snipping Tool for in-box capture. Greenshot for simple markup. Lightshot and Flameshot are other extras.
