Greenshot
Also called green shot, getgreenshot
A simple screenshot annotator. The process is Greenshot.exe. It is not ShareX.
What you need to know
Greenshot is a simple annotator. ShareX is the power-user suite.
Greenshot captures and annotates with a small editor. Get it from getgreenshot.org. It is not ShareX and it is not the Windows 11 Snipping Tool.
- What is it?
- A simple screenshot annotator
- Same as ShareX?
- No. ShareX has more workflows
- In-box?
- No. Snipping Tool is the Windows app
What is Greenshot?
Greenshot captures a region and opens a lightweight editor. Greenshot.exe sits in the tray. ShareX.exe is the heavier sibling with destinations and scrolling capture.
If you have never used it
If you want a small annotator after Print Screen, Greenshot is the simple open-source tool. Download it from getgreenshot.org. It opens an editor for arrows and boxes. It is not ShareX, which adds workflows and uploads, and it is not Snipping Tool.
What is it used for?
Arrows, boxes, and blur. ShareX can do this too, with more after-capture tasks.
The destination menu is short on purpose. ShareX's destination list is longer.
Greenshot is an annotator first. Lightshot's upload path is a different caution.
Who is it for?
- People who want arrows on a snip without ShareX's options
- Offices that standardized on Greenshot years ago
- Anyone comparing this to Snipping Tool markup
Current status
Greenshot (2007) is a current screenshot annotator from Greenshot. The vendor still points Windows users at https://getgreenshot.org/.
How old is it?
Greenshot started in 2007, the same year as the ShareX lineage. It stayed a focused annotator. ShareX grew into a workflow suite. Current Greenshot still targets Windows desktops.

Common problems
Print Screen taken over and Snipping Tool seems broken
Greenshot hooks Print Screen. Change the hotkey or quit Greenshot. ShareX can steal the same key.
Old build from a third-party pack
getgreenshot.org is the project. A "Greenshot plus toolbar" bundle is not the vendor.
Getting unstuck
Install from getgreenshot.org
ShareX is at getsharex.com if you wanted the bigger tool. Snipping Tool is already in Windows.
Change the Print Screen hotkey in Greenshot settings if Windows snips vanish
One app can own that key. That is Greenshot, not a broken ShareX install.
If the editor will not open, start Greenshot from the tray icon
The capture lands in the editor window. Closing the tray exits the hook.
Alternatives
ShareX for workflows. Snipping Tool for in-box markup. Lightshot and Flameshot are other extras.
