Rockstar Games Launcher
Also called rockstar launcher, social club launcher
Rockstar’s client. Some GTA and Red Dead installs need it even when you bought them on Steam. The process often includes RockstarService.exe.

Rockstar’s launcher still rides along on many Steam GTA installs.
RockstarService.exe is the publisher service. Buying on Steam does not remove it. That two-client tax is Rockstar’s, not GOG’s optional Galaxy.

What is Rockstar Games Launcher?
The Rockstar Games Launcher is Rockstar’s Windows client and service. RockstarService.exe often stays running so GTA and RDR can sign in.
If you have never used it
If GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 asks for the Rockstar Games Launcher after you bought it on Steam, that is expected. Download the launcher from rockstargames.com/downloads. Sign in with a Rockstar / Social Club account. It is not Steam. Valve sold you a license that still starts RockstarService.exe. Epic can do the same for some titles. GOG’s optional client is not this requirement.
What is it used for?
Social Club sign-in and updates. Steam may own the purchase and still start this service. Fortnite does not live here.
Older Rockstar PC games the launcher still lists. Battle.net will not patch them.
Achievements and crew features. That overlay is Rockstar’s, not Steam’s Shift+Tab.

Current status
Rockstar Games Launcher (2019) is a current publisher launcher from Rockstar Games. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.rockstargames.com/downloads.
How old is it?
Social Club is older than the 2019 launcher branding. The standalone Rockstar Games Launcher became the Windows front door for GTA and RDR on PC. A 2015 “only steam_api.dll” memory is incomplete on current builds.

RockstarService can start with Windows. Turn launcher startup off if you only play on weekends, knowing the next Steam launch may start it anyway.

Steam game will not start without Rockstar
Install the official launcher. Verifying Steam files will not replace Social Club sign-in.
Service stays after you quit GTA
RockstarService.exe can remain. That is the publisher helper, not a second copy of Windows.

The official launcher is there. A “GTA crack launcher” is bait.
Sign in with the Social Club account linked to the purchase
A second Rockstar login looks empty even if Steam shows the game.
Repair the Rockstar launcher before you replace a GPU
Support’s launcher repair is the path when GTA dies at the Social Club splash.
Alternatives
Steam still sells the license, then starts this client. Epic can do the same. Playnite can list both. It cannot replace Social Club.
