Epic Games Launcher
Also called epic launcher, epic games store, egs
Epic’s store and Unreal Engine hub. Fortnite is a game you launch from it. The process is EpicGamesLauncher.exe. It is not Steam.
What you need to know
Epic is Fortnite, weekly free games, and Unreal. Steam is a different store.
EpicGamesLauncher.exe is the Epic account front door. It is not Valve’s overlay, not a DRM-free GOG installer host, and not the Ubisoft Club.
- What is it?
- Epic store, Fortnite, and Unreal hub
- Is Fortnite a separate article?
- You launch it from here. This page is the launcher
- Same as Steam?
- No. Different store and Fortnite path
What is Epic Games Launcher?
The Epic Games Launcher is Epic’s Windows store, Fortnite entry, and Unreal Engine installer. EpicGamesLauncher.exe stays open while you browse and update.
If you have never used it
If you play Fortnite, claim Epic’s weekly free game, or open Unreal Engine from the same login, this is the Epic Games Launcher. Download it from store.epicgames.com/download. Sign in with an Epic account. It is not Steam. Steam does not host Fortnite as first party, does not give Epic’s weekly free claim, and does not install Unreal Engine from this window. GOG’s DRM-free installers are a different store philosophy.
What is it used for?
Launch Fortnite and titles Epic sells or gives away. Steam will not start Fortnite from steam.exe. Battle.net will not either.
Epic’s timed free games land in this library. GOG and Steam have different giveaway stories. Those claims do not appear in GalaxyClient.exe.
Install engine versions and Fab content from the same Epic login. No other launcher in this batch is an Unreal installer.
Who is it for?
- Fortnite players on Windows
- People who claim Epic’s weekly free games
- Developers who install Unreal Engine through this launcher
Current status
Epic Games Launcher (2018) is a current game store and launcher from Epic Games. The vendor still points Windows users at https://store.epicgames.com/download.
How old is it?
Epic opened the Epic Games Store in 2018 after years of Fortnite as the main Windows front door. Unreal Engine is much older. The launcher is new next to Steam 2003 and Battle.net 1996. A 2012 “get Fortnite from a website zip” memory is unsafe and obsolete.

System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum
| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per Epic’s launcher notes |
|---|---|
| RAM | The launcher is light. Fortnite and Unreal want their own RAM |
Resource profile
- Disk demand
- High while Fortnite or an Unreal version downloads
- Network demand
- Store, updates, and Epic account services
Installed processes
These executables belong to this product when it is installed.
| EpicGamesLauncher.exe | Main Windows executable |
|---|---|
| EpicWebHelper.exe | Embedded web views in the launcher |
Startup components
Epic can start with Windows from its settings so Fortnite updates in the background. Turn that off if you only launch by hand.
File locations

Common problems
Launcher stuck on “installing” Unreal or Fortnite
Epic’s download cache is the first check. Verifying a Steam game will not move an Epic install.
People hunt Steam for Fortnite
Fortnite’s supported PC path is this launcher. steam.exe is the wrong store.
Getting unstuck
Install from store.epicgames.com/download
The official EpicInstaller is there. A “Fortnite setup” on a forum is a common bait file.
Use Epic’s verify on the Epic title, not Steam’s verify
Library > the game > manage. Valve’s verify button does not touch Epic folders.
Sign in with the Epic account that owns Fortnite
A different Epic login looks empty. That is not a missing Visual C++ pack by itself.
Alternatives
Steam for the Valve library you already paid for. Heroic if you want an unofficial Epic plus GOG shell. Xbox app for Game Pass.

Related hardware
The launcher is light. Fortnite and Unreal set the real GPU and CPU bar, not EpicGamesLauncher.exe.
