Postman
Also called postman app, postman desktop
Postman's API client. The Windows process is Postman.exe. Collections live in a workspace that can sync. A browser tab on postman.com is not this exe.
What you need to know
Postman.exe is the desktop API client, not a browser tab.
Postman is an Electron API client. Collections and environments can sync with an account. Hitting the same endpoint in Edge is msedge.exe. curl.exe is a different tool.
- What is it?
- Desktop API client
- Is a browser enough?
- For one URL, yes. Collections need the app or export
- Need an account?
- For sync. Local use can stay unsigned
What is Postman?
Postman is an API client for HTTP requests, collections, and team workspaces. It is not a browser, not curl, and not Insomnia by name.
If you have never used it
If a backend README said install Postman, get the Windows app from postman.com/downloads. Postman.exe is the desktop client. Sending the same request in a browser tab is still the browser. You do not need this exe to use curl. Workspaces can sync to a Postman account.
What is it used for?
GET and POST against an API. A chrome.exe tab on the same URL is still Chrome.
Saved requests and variables. Those live in Postman, not in a .http file unless you export.
Signed-in workspaces. A local-only curl script does not need this login.
Who is it for?
- API developers whose team shares Postman collections
- Testers who were told to import a collection JSON
- Anyone who thinks a browser address bar is this app
Current status
Postman (2012) is a current api client from Postman. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.postman.com/downloads/.
How old is it?
Postman started as a Chrome app in 2012 and moved to a desktop client. The current Windows app is that Electron client. A 2014 Chrome Web Store listing is the old packaging.
Versions

System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum
| Operating system | A current 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per Postman |
|---|---|
| RAM | Electron baseline plus open collections |
Resource profile
- CPU demand
- Follows what you open inside the app
- RAM demand
- Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

Common problems
People treat a browser 401 as a Postman bug
Cookies and headers differ. The desktop app has its own environment store.
Sync wants an account
Local scratch requests can stay offline. Team workspaces need a Postman login. That is not a Windows profile issue.
Getting unstuck
Install from postman.com/downloads
A Postman portable from a tools pack is junk. Postman hosts the real installer.
Check the environment dropdown before you blame the API
A leftover {{baseUrl}} is a Postman variable, not a DNS failure.
Quit the tray app if helpers stay after close
Electron can leave Postman.exe until you quit. That is not chrome.exe.
Alternatives
curl and Invoke-RestMethod for a terminal. VS Code REST Client for .http files. Insomnia is another API GUI.

Related hardware
The shell is Electron-class. Large collections want RAM. A GPU is irrelevant.
