Visual Studio Code
Also called vscode, vs code, visual studio code, code.exe
A lightweight editor from Microsoft. The process is Code.exe. Visual Studio the IDE is devenv.exe and a different installer.
What you need to know
VS Code is Code.exe. Visual Studio is a different product.
Visual Studio Code is a folder-based editor with an extension host. It is not the Visual Studio IDE, compilers, and designers that ship as devenv.exe.

What is Visual Studio Code?
Visual Studio Code is Microsoft's Electron editor. User installs land under AppData\Local\Programs\Microsoft VS Code. The Insiders channel uses a different exe name.
If you have never used it
If a class said "install VS Code", this is the small editor, not Visual Studio the IDE. Download it from code.visualstudio.com. You open a folder, install a language extension, and edit files. devenv.exe is the other product. Code.exe is this one.
What is it used for?
A folder-based editor for source, config, and notes. It is not Word.
The Marketplace adds languages. Those servers are why RAM grows after a Python or TypeScript install.
Remote-SSH and WSL run the heavy work elsewhere. The window on Windows is still Code.exe.
Who is it for?
- People who want an editor, not a full Visual Studio workload
- Users who live in extensions and terminals
- Anyone who confused the Start menu names
Current status
Actively developed. Monthly stable releases. This article is the stable Windows build, not VS Code for the Web.
How old is it?
Microsoft shipped VS Code in 2015. It is younger than Visual Studio (1997) and older than most AI editor forks. The monthly stable train is the current product. VS Code for the Web is a different host.
Versions
Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.
System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

| CPU | A 64-bit processor, per Microsoft |
|---|---|
| RAM | 1 GB class is listed. Language servers want more |
| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per Microsoft |

Common problems
Watcher storms on node_modules
Exclude those folders in settings. That is a VS Code fix, not SysMain.
Name collision with Visual Studio
Uninstalling Visual Studio does not remove Code.exe and the other way around.
Getting unstuck
Disable extensions as a test
code --disable-extensions launches a clean window. That isolates a bad language server.
Exclude node_modules from the watcher
Files: Watcher Exclude in settings. That is a VS Code fix, not SysMain.
Install from code.visualstudio.com
User versus system installers both exist. A "VS Code pro" bundle is junk.
Alternatives
Visual Studio, Neovim, and other editors overlap. Pick them for debugging and compilers, not because Code.exe looked busy.
