ApplicationAgileBits

Also called 1 password, one password, agilebits

AgileBitsSecurity

A paid password manager from AgileBits. Watchtower is a 1Password feature. The window is 1Password.exe. It is not Bitwarden and you do not self-host it.

What you need to know

1Password is a paid AgileBits vault. Watchtower is their feature name.

1Password.exe is the Windows client. The vault is hosted by AgileBits, not self-hosted like Bitwarden. Watchtower is a 1Password feature. KeePass is a local kdbx. LastPass is a different cloud vendor.

What is it?
Paid AgileBits vault. Watchtower lives here
Self-host?
No. That is a Bitwarden story
Same as Bitwarden?
No. Different vendor and license
Feex says
If I see 1Password.exe, I would not look for a self-host URL. AgileBits runs the service. Watchtower is their name for breach and reuse alerts. Bitwarden is a different product with a different license.

What is 1Password?

1Password is AgileBits' paid password manager. 1Password.exe is the Windows app. Watchtower flags reused and breached passwords inside this product.

If you have never used it

If you want a paid vault with Watchtower, this is 1Password from AgileBits. Download the Windows app from 1password.com/downloads/windows. 1Password.exe is the desktop client. AgileBits hosts the account. There is no official self-host like Bitwarden. It is not KeePass, not LastPass, and not NordPass.

What is it used for?

Paid hosted vault

Your items live on 1Password's service. You do not stand up a Bitwarden-style server.

Watchtower

Watchtower is 1Password's check for reused, weak, and breached passwords. Bitwarden has other reports. The name Watchtower is not theirs.

Travel Mode and sharing

Travel Mode hides vaults on a device. That is a 1Password feature, not a KeePass plugin.

Who is it for?

  • Households and teams that already pay AgileBits
  • People who want Watchtower by name
  • Anyone told "just use Bitwarden" who specifically bought 1Password

Current status

Actively developed. This article is the Windows desktop app, not the browser extension alone.

How old is it?

AgileBits shipped 1Password in 2006, first on Mac, later Windows. Watchtower is a long-running 1Password name. Current Windows builds are the 8.x app family. A 1Password 4 local-vault-only setup is an older model.

Typical install C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\1Password\

Common problems

People expect a Bitwarden-style self-host field

1Password does not offer that. The account is on 1Password.com.

Watchtower empty after a new import

Watchtower needs items in the vault and a signed-in account. It is not Windows SmartScreen.

Getting unstuck

Install from 1password.com/downloads/windows

A Microsoft Store listing can exist. A random "1Password full" exe host is not AgileBits.

Unlock 1Password.exe before blaming the browser

The extension talks to the desktop app. A locked vault will not fill.

Use Watchtower inside 1Password, not a third-party breach tool

Watchtower is the vendor feature. It is not Have I Been Pwned's website by itself, though it uses similar signals.

Alternatives

Bitwarden if you want open source and optional self-host. Dashlane if you already pay that vendor. KeePass if you want only a local file.

Official help and downloads

Start with the vendor. Random exe sites are not a support channel.

Related hardware

The desktop app is light. Unlock and Watchtower checks need a network.
