MySQL Workbench
Also called workbench, mysql workbench ce
Oracle's official GUI for MySQL. The process is MySQLWorkbench.exe. It is not DBeaver and not the mysqld server.
What you need to know
MySQL Workbench is Oracle's MySQL GUI, not DBeaver.
MySQLWorkbench.exe is the official MySQL client from Oracle. DBeaver is a multi-engine GUI. mysqld.exe is the database server. pgAdmin is the PostgreSQL official GUI.
- What is it?
- Oracle's official MySQL GUI
- Same as DBeaver?
- No. This one is MySQL-first
- Is it the server?
- No. mysqld.exe is the server
What is MySQL Workbench?
MySQL Workbench is Oracle's official modeling and SQL GUI for MySQL. It is not DBeaver, not pgAdmin, and not the MySQL server process.
If you have never used it
If you only administer MySQL, Oracle's GUI is MySQL Workbench. Download it from dev.mysql.com/downloads/workbench. MySQLWorkbench.exe is the client. mysqld.exe is the server. DBeaver can also talk to MySQL. It is a different universal GUI.
What is it used for?
Query tabs and result grids for MySQL. pgAdmin will not open a MySQL connection as its first job.
Workbench models are a MySQL product feature. DBeaver has its own diagrams.
Users, dumps, and server status. The server is still mysqld.exe if it is on this PC.
Who is it for?
- People whose stack is MySQL or MariaDB-compatible workflows
- Students whose class installed the MySQL Installer with Workbench checked
- Anyone who opened DBeaver and wondered where the official Oracle GUI went
Current status
MySQL Workbench (2002) is a current mysql gui from Oracle. The vendor still points Windows users at https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/workbench/.
How old is it?
MySQL GUI tools existed in the early 2000s. Workbench is the current official desktop client. It is not phpMyAdmin in a browser and not the 5.0 Query Browser name.

System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum
| Operating system | A current 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per Oracle's Workbench download notes |
|---|---|
| RAM | The GUI is modest. Large result sets want more RAM |
Resource profile
- CPU demand
- Follows what you open inside the app
- RAM demand
- Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

Workbench does not run the server. Starting Workbench at sign-in is optional and is not mysqld.

Common problems
Workbench installed, server not
The MySQL Installer can add both. Workbench alone will not start a server. postgres.exe is a different engine.
Connector or Visual C++ runtime missing
Oracle documents prerequisites on the download page. That is not a DBeaver driver JAR.
Getting unstuck
Download from dev.mysql.com/downloads/workbench
An Oracle account may be required. A Workbench pack on a freeware site is junk.
Confirm you are talking to MySQL, not Postgres
pgAdmin4.exe is the other official GUI. Port 3306 versus 5432 is the usual tell.
Test the same login in the mysql CLI
If the CLI fails, the server or user is the story. Workbench is then not the only broken piece.
Alternatives
DBeaver if you need more than MySQL. phpMyAdmin in a browser. The mysql command-line client that ships with the server.
Official help and downloads
Start with the vendor. Random exe sites are not a support channel.

Related hardware
The GUI is modest. The server you point at wants RAM and disk. Those are mysqld requirements, not this window.
