DBeaver
Also called dbeaver community, dbeaver ce
A universal database GUI. The Windows process is dbeaver.exe. Community is free. It is not SQL Server Management Studio.
What you need to know
DBeaver is a universal GUI. SSMS is the SQL Server tool.
dbeaver.exe is DBeaver Community or Enterprise. It speaks to many databases through drivers. SQL Server Management Studio is Microsoft-only. MySQL Workbench and pgAdmin are official single-engine GUIs.
- What is it?
- Universal database GUI
- Same as SSMS?
- No. SSMS is SQL Server
- Is Community free?
- Yes. Enterprise is paid
What is DBeaver?
DBeaver is a multi-database desktop GUI. Community is free. It is not SSMS, not MySQL Workbench, and not the database server itself.
If you have never used it
If you need one GUI for more than one database, DBeaver Community is the usual free pick. Download it from dbeaver.io/download. dbeaver.exe talks through JDBC drivers. SQL Server Management Studio is Microsoft's SQL Server tool. MySQL Workbench and pgAdmin are vendor GUIs for one engine.
What is it used for?
PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, and more via drivers. SSMS is SQL Server-first. Compass is MongoDB-first.
Editors and result grids. Workbench and pgAdmin have their own SQL windows.
Enterprise adds paid features. Community is the free build most people mean.
Who is it for?
- Developers who hop between more than one database
- People whose shop is not SQL Server-only
- Anyone who installed SSMS and wondered why Postgres would not attach
Current status
DBeaver (2011) is a current database gui from DBeaver Corp. The vendor still points Windows users at https://dbeaver.io/download/.
How old is it?
DBeaver started in 2011 as a universal JDBC client. Community remains Apache licensed. Enterprise is the paid line. It is younger than pgAdmin and older than MongoDB Compass.
Versions

System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum
| Operating system | A current 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per DBeaver |
|---|---|
| RAM | A 4 GB class machine runs the GUI. Large result grids want more |
Resource profile
- CPU demand
- Follows what you open inside the app
- RAM demand
- Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

Common problems
Missing driver download
DBeaver prompts for a driver JAR. That is this app. SSMS will not fetch a Postgres driver for you.
People expect SSMS object explorer
The tree is DBeaver's. SQL Server-only shops may still want SSMS for Agent and registered servers.
Getting unstuck
Install from dbeaver.io/download
A DBeaver portable from a tools pack is junk. The project hosts Community there.
Test the same host with the official GUI if needed
Workbench for MySQL, pgAdmin for Postgres, Compass for MongoDB. Failure in all of them is the server, not DBeaver.
Check you opened Community, not a leftover EE trial
Help > About names the edition. That is not SSMS About.
Alternatives
SSMS for SQL Server. MySQL Workbench, pgAdmin, and MongoDB Compass for those engines. Azure Data Studio is another Microsoft GUI.

Related hardware
The Java UI wants a modest heap. Huge result sets want RAM. The database server is usually the heavy machine.
