Microsoft Authenticator

ApplicationMicrosoft Corporation

Also called ms authenticator, azure authenticator, microsoft 2fa

Microsoft CorporationSecurity

Microsoft's authenticator. The real client is the phone app. Microsoft says it is not available for PC or Mac. It is not Authy.

What you need to know

Microsoft Authenticator is a phone app. Microsoft says it is not for PC.

The supported client is iOS or Android. Authy is a different vendor and its desktop app is retired. Okta Verify is the work app IT may assign instead. Windows Hello is a different PC sign-in.

What is it?
Microsoft phone authenticator
Windows app?
Microsoft says not available for PC
Same as Authy?
No. Different vendor. Authy desktop is retired
Feex says
If you are searching for Microsoft.Authenticator.exe on Windows, I would send you to the phone store instead. Microsoft says the authenticator is not for PC. Authy Desktop is also the wrong leftover. I would not invent a Feex phone push.

What is Microsoft Authenticator?

Microsoft Authenticator is a phone 2FA and passwordless app. The supported install is iOS or Android. It is not Authy and not a current Windows desktop vault.

If you have never used it

If work said install Microsoft Authenticator, that is the phone app, not a Windows download. Microsoft's download help says it is not available for PC or Mac. Get it from the iOS or Android store linked on microsoft.com/security/mobile-authenticator-app. Authy Desktop is a retired Twilio app, not this. Windows Hello is a different sign-in. A leftover Microsoft.Authenticator.exe from an old companion story is not the product Microsoft points you to today.

What is it used for?

Approve Microsoft sign-ins on a phone

Push or TOTP on iOS or Android. That is the product. A PC exe is not what Microsoft lists.

Work and school accounts

Entra ID / Microsoft 365 MFA often requires this phone app. Okta Verify is a different work app.

Passwordless phone sign-in

Microsoft account passwordless lives here. That is not Windows Hello on the PC by itself.

Who is it for?

  • People told to install Authenticator on a phone
  • Users hunting a Windows Store listing that Microsoft no longer treats as the real client
  • Anyone who should not install Authy Desktop as a substitute

Current status

Actively developed as a phone app. This article is not a supported Windows desktop product.

How old is it?

Microsoft Authenticator is a 2010s phone app. Microsoft still documents it as mobile-only. Older Windows companion experiments are not the current supported client. Authy Desktop died in 2024. This app did not replace that desktop window.

Common problems

Authy Desktop is retired. It will not enroll as Microsoft Authenticator.

Getting unstuck

Install from the iOS or Android store via Microsoft's page

support.microsoft.com/authenticator/download-microsoft-authenticator is the current story.

Use Windows Hello or a security key if you needed a PC factor

Those are other Microsoft sign-in methods. They are not this phone app.

If IT said Okta, install Okta Verify

Different work MFA. Authenticator will not show Okta push the same way.

Alternatives

Okta Verify for Okta-managed work. Authy phone app if you already live there. A hardware security key if IT allows it.
