lastpass.exe is the Windows process. The vault is LastPass's cloud, not a KeePass file and not Bitwarden self-host. GoTo owned it during the 2022 incidents. 1Password and Bitwarden are different vendors.

LastPass is a cloud password manager. lastpass.exe is the Windows client. The vendor hosts the vault. 2022 is part of the public story.

If you have never used it

If you still open LastPass, this is the older cloud vault, not Bitwarden. Download from lastpass.com. lastpass.exe is the Windows process. LastPass hosted vaults and disclosed incidents in 2022. GoTo owned it for years. A later spin-off does not erase that history. It is not KeePass, not 1Password Watchtower, and not a reason to keep a reused master password.

The extension is how most people used it. lastpass.exe is the desktop companion on some setups.

How old is it?

LastPass launched in 2008, was bought by LogMeIn/GoTo, and later spun out. The 2022 cloud-storage incidents are why many guides say leave. Current lastpass.com is still this product. A 2010 bookmarklet is not the current app.

Common problems

People pretend 2022 did not happen

LastPass published incident notices. Migration is a user choice. Denying the history does not make it Bitwarden.

Master password reuse

A hosted vault with a reused master password is the worst case for this product. That is not a KeePass local-file story.

Getting unstuck

Export before you uninstall if you are leaving

LastPass documents vault export. Import into Bitwarden or 1Password is a migration, not a clone.

Confirm lastpass.com, not a lookalike

Phish pages copy the LastPass dialog. The official help is support.lastpass.com.

Do not install Bitwarden beside it without a plan

Two vaults with different contents is how people lose a login. Pick a destination and export.

Alternatives

Bitwarden for open source and optional self-host. 1Password for a paid AgileBits vault. KeePass or KeePassXC for a local kdbx with no LastPass server.
