Docker Desktop
Also called docker desktop for windows, docker
Docker's Windows GUI and engine for containers. The window is Docker Desktop.exe. WSL 2 is a backend it can use. Installing WSL alone is not this product.
What you need to know
Docker Desktop is not WSL by itself.
Docker Desktop is Docker Inc.'s Windows app. It can use WSL 2, Hyper-V, or Docker VMM as a backend. wsl.exe is Microsoft's Linux layer. Installing Ubuntu in WSL does not install Docker Desktop.exe.
- What is it?
- A container GUI plus engine
- Is WSL enough?
- No. WSL is a backend, not Desktop
- Needs virtualization?
- Yes. Docker lists SLAT and 8 GB RAM
What is Docker Desktop?
Docker Desktop is the Windows GUI, Linux VM or WSL backend, and docker CLI integration from Docker Inc. It is not the WSL distro you already installed for school.
If you have never used it
If a tutorial said install Docker, on Windows that usually means Docker Desktop from docker.com. You still need virtualization on. WSL 2 is the common backend. A working wsl prompt is not the same as Docker Desktop.exe in the tray. License terms depend on company size.
What is it used for?
Images and compose stacks start through Desktop. That is not a bare wsl --install.
The CLIs talk to the Desktop engine. A docker binary only inside Ubuntu is a different install.
WSL 2 is the default for many PCs. Hyper-V needs an all-users install. Neither backend is WSL alone.
Who is it for?
- Developers whose README assumes docker compose
- People who enabled WSL and wondered why docker was not a command
- Shops that must check Docker Desktop licensing
Current status
Docker Desktop (2016) is a current containers from Docker Inc.. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.docker.com/products/docker-desktop/.
How old is it?
Docker Desktop for Windows arrived in 2016 after Docker Toolbox and VirtualBox workarounds. Current Desktop expects a recent Windows 10 or 11 build and a current WSL. It is not the 2014 boot2docker days.
Versions

System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum
| Operating system | Docker documents recent 64-bit Windows 10 (22H2 class) or Windows 11 builds |
|---|---|
| RAM | 8 GB system RAM listed for the WSL 2 backend, per Docker |
Resource profile
- CPU demand
- Follows what you open inside the app
- RAM demand
- Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

Startup components
Docker Desktop can start with Windows from its own setting. That starts the engine VM, not a Microsoft service named Docker.

Common problems
WSL works, docker does not
Ubuntu in WSL is not Docker Desktop. Install Desktop from docker.com, then enable the WSL 2 based engine in its settings.
Virtualization off in firmware
Docker documents VT-x or AMD-V. A Hyper-V checkbox cannot fix firmware that disabled virtualization.
Getting unstuck
Confirm Docker Desktop is installed, not only WSL
Start menu should show Docker Desktop. wsl -l -v names distros. Those are not the same product.
Check WSL version against Docker's floor
Docker asks for WSL 2.1.5 or later for the WSL 2 backend. wsl --version is the check.
Read the installer docs for backend and license
Per-user installs cannot use Hyper-V. Company size can require a paid subscription.
Alternatives
Podman Desktop and a Linux Docker Engine overlap. Pick them for license or workflow, not because WSL already had a penguin icon.

Virtualization, 8 GB RAM, and an SSD matter more than a gaming GPU. Images want disk.
