Bulk Rename Utility
Also called bru, tgrmn bulk rename
A powerful batch rename tool. The process is Bulk Rename Utility.exe. Preview first. It is not Explorer rename.
What you need to know
Bulk Rename Utility is a dense batch renamer. Explorer F2 is one name.
TGRMN Bulk Rename Utility renames many files with a preview. Get it from bulkrenameutility.co.uk. It is not Explorer rename. Preview first. It is easy to make a mess.
- What is it?
- A powerful batch renamer
- Same as Explorer rename?
- No. Explorer is one name or a small numbered set
- Preview?
- Yes. Always read New Name first
What is Bulk Rename Utility?
Bulk Rename Utility applies many rename rules at once. The exe name includes spaces: Bulk Rename Utility.exe. Explorer's F2 is a single-name edit. PowerToys PowerRename is a different Microsoft utility.
If you have never used it
If you need to rename 200 files at once, Bulk Rename Utility is TGRMN's dense Windows tool. Download it from bulkrenameutility.co.uk. Use the preview column before you click Rename. It is not the F2 rename in Explorer, and it is easy to make a mess if you skip the preview.
What is it used for?
The grid of options is the product. Explorer cannot do this in one dialog.
The New Name column is mandatory reading. Skipping it is how people wreck a photo folder.
Advanced boxes are still BRU. PowerRename is the PowerToys alternative with a simpler UI.
Who is it for?
- People with a camera dump named DSC_0001
- Anyone who outgrew Explorer's numbered rename
- Users who should snapshot the folder before they click Rename
Current status
Bulk Rename Utility (2001) is a current batch rename from TGRMN Software. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/.
How old is it?
Bulk Rename Utility started in 2001. Explorer still renames one file, or a small numbered set. PowerToys has a lighter PowerRename. BRU is the older, denser control panel.

Common problems
Rename without reading New Name
Undo is limited. That is why the preview exists. Explorer's Ctrl+Z after one F2 is not the same safety net.
Business use on the free build
Read TGRMN's license. PowerRename in PowerToys is a Microsoft alternative.
Getting unstuck
Download from bulkrenameutility.co.uk
A "BRU crack" is not TGRMN. Explorer rename is already on the PC if you only needed F2.
Sort and filter the file list, then read New Name before Rename
That is the BRU workflow. PowerToys PowerRename has its own preview.
If names went wrong, stop and restore from backup or File History
Do not run a second guess pass on the same folder. Explorer cannot reconstruct the old names.
Alternatives
Explorer for one file. PowerToys PowerRename for a simpler batch. Advanced Renamer is another third-party tool.

Related hardware
A local disk is enough. Network folders make a huge rename slower and riskier.
