wslservice.exe

Windows ProcessMicrosoft Corporation

Also called wslservice, wsl service, lxssmanager

WindowsSystem Component

WSL service (WslService). It coordinates distributions and the WSL2 utility VM. It is not the wsl.exe CLI and it is not wslhost.exe.

What you need to know

This is the WSL service, not the wsl.exe CLI.

wslservice.exe is WslService. It starts the WSL2 VM, registers distributions, and talks to Linux init. wsl.exe is the command you type. wslhost.exe is a per-distro interop helper. Ending the service is not the same as closing a terminal tab.

Safe?
Yes, with a Microsoft WSL package
Same as wsl.exe?
No. This is the service
Should I end it?
Running distros stop
Feex says
If I see wslservice next to Ubuntu, I treat that as the coordinator. I run wsl -l -v when I want the CLI story. I do not end wsl.exe and call WslService dead.

What is wslservice.exe?

wslservice.exe is the WSL service, not the wsl.exe CLI. The service name is WslService. It coordinates distributions and the WSL2 utility VM. wslhost.exe only helps a running distro with interop.

What does it do?

It creates WSL sessions, mounts shares, and keeps an hvsocket to the VM. It does not parse `wsl -l -v` for you and it does not draw Windows Terminal.

Why is it running?

You opened a distro, Docker Desktop, VS Code WSL, or another client called ILxssUserSession. A quiet service after `wsl --shutdown` is expected.

Is it safe?

Usually safe

A Microsoft-signed copy under WindowsApps MicrosoftCorporationII.WindowsSubsystemForLinux or System32 is WslService. A wslservice.exe in Downloads is not. This file is still not wsl.exe.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\MicrosoftCorporationII.WindowsSubsystemForLinux_*\wslservice.exe

  • Also seen as System32\wslservice.exe on some builds
  • Service name: WslService
  • CLI sibling: wsl.exe, not this image

Can I end it?

Stops WSL sessions

Ending wslservice.exe tears down the coordinator. Running distributions exit. That is not closing wsl.exe, and it is not ending wslhost for one distro.

Can I remove it?

Uninstall WSL, not a random exe

Turn Windows Subsystem for Linux off from Optional features or uninstall the WSL Store package. Do not delete System32 or WindowsApps by hand. Removing wsl.exe does not remove WslService.

Should it start with Windows?

WslService starts on demand when a WSL client connects. It is not a Startup Apps checkbox next to wsl.exe.

Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

CPU
Low unless a distro is starting or stuck
Memory
Small. Guest RAM shows as vmmemWSL, not here
Disk
VHDX and share mounts belong to the distro
Network
Control plane to the VM, not your SSH session

File information

wslservice.exe file information
Executable name wslservice.exe
Common legitimate path C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\MicrosoftCorporationII.WindowsSubsystemForLinux_*\wslservice.exe
Publisher Microsoft Corporation
Signature expectation Signed by Microsoft Windows

Common problems

People kill wsl.exe thinking they stopped the service

The CLI exits. WslService can keep the VM and other distros alive. Use wsl --shutdown if you want the coordinator quiet.

Docker or VS Code WSL keeps bringing it back

Those apps call the service. Closing one Ubuntu tab does not uninstall WslService.

Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

wsl -l -v from a prompt, not Task Manager on wsl.exe

State and version live on the CLI. wslservice is the session 0 host those commands talk to.

wsl --shutdown to stop the VM, then reopen one distro

If the service will not start, repair the WSL Store package. Do not replace wslhost.exe to "fix" WslService.
