wsl.exe

Windows ProcessMicrosoft Corporation

Also called wsl, windows subsystem for linux cli, wsl.exe

WindowsSystem Component

User-facing WSL command-line launcher. You run `wsl -l -v` here. It is not vmmem and it is not WslService.

What you need to know

wsl.exe is the CLI you run; it is not vmmem.

wsl.exe is the inbox launcher. `wsl -l -v` prints distributions. Guest RAM for WSL2 shows as vmmem or vmmemWSL. WslService keeps the VM alive after this CLI exits. Closing the prompt is not a memory cleanup.

Safe?
Yes, in System32
Is it vmmem?
No. vmmem is guest memory
Can I end it?
That CLI session ends
Feex says
If someone points at wsl.exe for "8 GB of WSL RAM," I look at vmmemWSL. I use the CLI to list and shut down. I do not end the launcher and expect the VM working set to vanish.

What is wsl.exe?

wsl.exe is the CLI you run; it is not vmmem. Task Manager memory for the WSL2 VM is vmmemWSL (or vmmem). This file only launches and controls. It is also not WslService.

What does it do?

It starts a distro, runs Linux commands, and accepts `wsl --shutdown`. It does not hold the guest working set and it does not host Hyper-V Manager.

Why is it running?

You, a script, Windows Terminal, or an IDE launched WSL. A short-lived wsl.exe is a one-shot command. A long-lived one is an attached shell.

Is it safe?

Usually safe

System32 wsl.exe is the Microsoft CLI. A wsl.exe in Downloads is not. High RAM on a different row named vmmem is not this launcher.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

C:\Windows\System32\wsl.exe

  • Inbox launcher in System32
  • List distros with wsl -l -v
  • Memory sibling: vmmem / vmmemWSL, not this file

Can I end it?

Closes that CLI

Ending wsl.exe stops that command or shell. The WSL2 VM can stay in vmmemWSL until `wsl --shutdown`. Ending vmmem is not offered as a file delete.

Can I remove it?

Optional features, not Explorer

Remove Windows Subsystem for Linux from Optional features or the Store package. Do not delete System32\wsl.exe. Deleting vmmem is not a supported uninstall.

Should it start with Windows?

A shortcut or Terminal profile can start it. The VM memory row is not this CLI.

Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

CPU
Follows the attached command
Memory
Small. Guest RAM is vmmemWSL
Disk
Low on the Windows side

Common problems

People try to delete vmmem because wsl.exe looks small

vmmem is guest memory on the host. Use wsl --shutdown from this CLI. There is no vmmem.exe cleanup in System32.

`wsl -l -v` empty after they ended WslService

The CLI cannot talk to a dead coordinator. Start WslService, then list again. The launcher file was never the service.

Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

Run wsl -l -v before you hunt RAM

Stopped distros still leave a VM until shutdown. vmmemWSL is that working set. This exe is only the command.

wsl --shutdown, then confirm vmmemWSL left

If the CLI errors, repair WSL. Do not replace wsl.exe from a zip, and do not delete a vmmem file.
