vlc.exe
Also called vlc, videolan, vlc media player
VLC media player. It is usually one process for the playlist and the decode, not a Chromium-style process cloud.
What you need to know
VLC is typically one vlc.exe. Browsers are the ones that multiply.
vlc.exe is VideoLAN VLC. A single process decodes the file. High GPU is often hardware acceleration. It is not a browser helper named vlc.

What is vlc.exe?
vlc.exe is VLC media player from VideoLAN. It plays local files and streams without installing a pile of separate codec exes.
What does it do?
It decodes audio and video in-process. Hardware acceleration talks to the GPU. Desktop Window Manager still composites the window.
Why is it running?
You double-clicked a file that is associated with VLC, or you opened the app. A vlc.exe in a codec pack next to a game crack is not VideoLAN.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
A signed VideoLAN build under Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC is the player. Bundle installers that add extra toolbar exes are the risk, not this filename in the official folder.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe
- Expected publisher: VideoLAN
- Usually one process
- Avoid third-party "VLC plus extras" bundles
Can I end it?
Stops playback
Ending vlc.exe closes the player. You lose the current position unless you resume from the playlist.
Can I remove it?
Uninstall VLC
Use Settings > Apps or the VideoLAN uninstaller. Do not delete only vlc.exe if you also installed bundled junk from another site.
Should it start with Windows?
VLC should not start with Windows unless you added a shortcut. A Startup VLC is unusual and worth a look.

Common problems
Broken hardware decode
VideoLAN documents turning off accelerated output as a test. That is VLC settings, not a GPU driver reinstall first.
People install "codec packs" beside VLC
VLC already decodes. Extra packs add other exes and shell junk.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Preferences > Input / Codecs > hardware-accelerated decoding
Toggle as a test if a file crashes or spins the GPU.
Confirm Program Files\VideoLAN
Any other folder with vlc.exe needs a publisher check.
