dwm.exe
Also called dwm, desktop window manager
Desktop Window Manager. It composites the Windows desktop, animations, and transparency.
What you need to know
This draws the Windows desktop you are looking at.
Desktop Window Manager composites windows onto the screen. Ending it can blank the desktop or restart the compositor. Some GPU use is part of the job.
- Safe?
- Yes, if it is in System32
- Should I close it?
- No
- GPU use normal?
- Some GPU use is expected
What is dwm.exe?
dwm.exe is Desktop Window Manager, the Windows compositor. It builds the final picture of the desktop from each window.
What does it do?
It handles window frames, animations, snap layouts, and the composition that lets windows overlap without tearing the old way.
Why is it running?
It runs whenever you are at a graphical desktop. Current Windows does not offer a supported desktop without it.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
The legitimate copy lives in System32 and is signed by Microsoft. A dwm.exe from a Downloads folder is not that file.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Windows\System32\dwm.exe
- Expected publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- Expected path: System32
- The filename alone is not proof of safety
Can I end it?
No
Ending DWM can make the screen flicker, go black, or restart Explorer. It is not a performance cleanup.
Can I remove it?
No
Do not delete dwm.exe. Windows needs it to draw the desktop.
Should it start with Windows?
DWM starts with the interactive desktop. You should not remove it from startup.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Usually low unless a window is animating hard
- GPU
- Some use is normal. Spikes can follow a bad driver or a stuck app
- Memory
- Moderate. Many open windows raise it
- Disk
- Low

Common problems
High GPU
A leaking full-screen app or an outdated GPU driver can pin DWM. Update the vendor driver and close the suspect app before you end the compositor.
Black screen after end
If someone ended DWM, sign out or restart. Do not delete the file to "fix" the desktop.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Confirm the path and signature
Open the process properties and check that dwm.exe runs from the expected folder and is signed by the expected publisher. This is the first check, not a Registry edit.
See what the process is doing
Task Manager can show CPU, memory, disk, and GPU. High use during an obvious job is often normal. High use when the PC is idle needs a closer look at the related app or service.
Avoid destructive first steps
Do not delete dwm.exe, disable critical services without knowing the effect, or edit the Registry as the first move.
