Taskmgr.exe
Also called taskmgr, task manager, windows task manager
Task Manager. It is the viewer you are probably using to look at every other process on this wiki.
What you need to know
This is Task Manager itself. Ending it closes the viewer, not the apps you were watching.
Taskmgr.exe is Windows Task Manager. A high CPU row for Task Manager often means a fast update rate or a huge process list. It is not a hidden miner unless the path is wrong.
- Safe?
- Yes. You opened it
- High CPU?
- The update speed can do that
- Should I end it?
- That just closes the window
What is Taskmgr.exe?
Taskmgr.exe is Task Manager. Ctrl+Shift+Esc starts this file. It enumerates processes, performance counters, and Startup Apps.
What does it do?
It samples other processes. A high refresh rate makes Task Manager itself expensive. Efficiency mode and End task are actions it offers, not things it is.
Why is it running?
You, or a tool, opened Task Manager. A copy that starts at logon from a shortcut is still the viewer, not a service host.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
System32 Taskmgr is the real viewer. A Taskmgr.exe on the desktop from a "process hacker" zip is a different program.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Windows\System32\Taskmgr.exe
- Expected publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- Ctrl+Shift+Esc
- Update speed changes its own CPU
Can I end it?
Closes the window
Ending Taskmgr.exe closes Task Manager. Other apps keep running. That is the one End task that is usually harmless.
Can I remove it?
No
Do not delete Taskmgr.exe. Group Policy can hide Task Manager. Deleting the file is not the supported hide.
Should it start with Windows?
You can pin it. It should not install itself as a silent Startup entry. A fake Task Manager in Startup is a path check.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Follows update speed and the number of processes

- Network

Common problems
Task Manager was disabled by the administrator
That is policy, often on school or work PCs. Replacing Taskmgr.exe from the web is how people get malware.
Looks different after a Windows feature update
Windows 11 restyled it. The image name stayed Taskmgr.exe.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Set update speed to Low as a test
If the Task Manager row drops, you found the cost.
Open file location before you trust a second Task Manager
System32 only.
