ShellHost.exe
Also called shellhost, windows shell host
Windows Shell Host. Current Windows uses it for some shell surfaces that are not the full explorer.exe desktop.
What you need to know
This is a shell host helper. explorer.exe still owns the taskbar.
ShellHost.exe is a Windows shell host in System32. It is not File Explorer and it is not sihost.exe (flyouts). Ending it should not be your first taskbar fix.
- Safe?
- Yes, in System32
- Same as explorer?
- No. Explorer is the desktop shell
- Should I end it?
- A shell surface may close
What is ShellHost.exe?
ShellHost.exe is Windows Shell Host. Microsoft uses extra hosts so a crashing surface does not always take the whole desktop.
What does it do?
It hosts shell UI that is not a folder window. Folder windows stay in explorer.exe. Flyouts often stay in sihost.exe.
Why is it running?
The interactive session started a shell surface that this host owns. A missing ShellHost with a working taskbar can be normal if that surface is idle.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
System32 ShellHost signed by Microsoft is the host. A ShellHost.exe in a theme pack is not.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Windows\System32\ShellHost.exe
- Not explorer.exe
- Not sihost.exe
- Publisher: Microsoft Corporation
Can I end it?
May close a shell surface
Ending ShellHost.exe can close the surface it was hosting. Restart Explorer if the taskbar died. Do not loop-kill ShellHost as a tune-up.
Can I remove it?
No
Do not delete ShellHost.exe. Repair the shell with SFC after you confirm corruption, not with a downloaded host.
Should it start with Windows?
The session starts it as needed. It is not a vendor Startup leftover.
