SearchApp.exe
Also called searchapp, windows search app
Windows Search app host on Windows 10 and some later builds. SearchHost.exe is the newer Search host. SearchIndexer.exe writes the catalog.
What you need to know
This is a Search UI host. SearchIndexer.exe is the catalog writer. SearchHost.exe replaced this on many PCs.
SearchApp.exe is the Windows Search application package. High CPU here is the flyout or web suggestions, not necessarily SearchIndexer.exe chewing files.
- Safe?
- Yes. It is Windows Search UI
- Same as SearchHost?
- Newer builds often use SearchHost.exe
- High CPU?
- The UI, not always the indexer
What is SearchApp.exe?
SearchApp.exe is the Windows Search app host in Microsoft.Windows.Search. Some PCs still use SearchUI.exe. Current Windows 11 often shows SearchHost.exe instead.
What does it do?
It draws search results and can query the web. It does not write the file catalog. That is SearchIndexer.exe plus SearchProtocolHost.exe.
Why is it running?
You opened Search, or Windows prelaunched the host. A stuck copy after you closed Search is a known UI hang.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
The Microsoft.Windows.Search SearchApp.exe is Microsoft. A SearchApp.exe sitting in Temp is not the Search flyout.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Search_*\SearchApp.exe
- Search UI package
- Indexer is SearchIndexer.exe
- Newer host: SearchHost.exe
Can I end it?
Closes the Search flyout
Ending SearchApp.exe closes that Search UI. Indexing can continue. The host may restart on the next Search key.
Can I remove it?
No
Do not delete the Search package. Use Search settings to turn off web highlights.
Should it start with Windows?
The Search key or Start can start it. Not a vendor tray.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Suggestions and a stuck flyout
- Network
- Web search
- Memory
- Moderate
- Disk
- Low. The indexer is louder on disk

Common problems
High CPU blamed on SearchIndexer
Open Resource Monitor. UI CPU is this host. Disk storms are often the indexer.
Two Search names
SearchApp, SearchUI, and SearchHost are UI generations. SearchProtocolHost is a catalog worker.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Settings > Privacy & security > Search permissions
Cloud content is a common CPU and network source.
Restart this host before you rebuild the index
A flyout hang is not a corrupt catalog by itself.
