SearchHost.exe
Also called searchhost, windows search, search host
The Windows Search home host. It backs the search box on current Windows 10 and Windows 11.
What you need to know
This is the Search box, not a random leftover.
SearchHost.exe hosts the Windows Search experience. Indexing work often belongs to the Windows Search service behind it.

What is SearchHost.exe?
SearchHost.exe is the process behind the Windows Search home and search box on current Windows.
What does it do?
It shows search UI and talks to the Windows Search service for results. The indexer is a service, not this host alone.
Why is it running?
It runs when you open Search or when Windows keeps the search UI ready.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
The legitimate host is a Microsoft signed Windows component. High disk use is more often the indexer than this UI host.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Windows\SystemApps\MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS_cw5n1h2txyewy\SearchHost.exe
- The SystemApps folder name can change with Windows feature updates
- Expected publisher: Microsoft Corporation
Can I end it?
Usually no
Ending it closes Search UI. It does not stop the indexer and can make the next search slower to open.
Can I remove it?
No
Do not delete SearchHost.exe. It is part of the Windows Search experience.
Should it start with Windows?
Windows can start it with the shell. Removing it from startup is not a supported way to speed up the PC.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Can rise when the search flyout is open
- Memory
- Moderate while the UI stays resident
- Disk
- Indexer disk use is usually WSearch, not this host
- Network
- Web suggestions use the network if that feature is on

Common problems
Search box will not open
Restarting Explorer or the Windows Search service is a better first step than deleting SearchHost.
High disk after an upgrade
Windows may rebuild the index. That can last a while on a large drive.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
Confirm the path and signature
Open the process properties and check that SearchHost.exe runs from the expected folder and is signed by the expected publisher. This is the first check, not a Registry edit.
See what the process is doing
Task Manager can show CPU, memory, disk, and GPU. High use during an obvious job is often normal. High use when the PC is idle needs a closer look at the related app or service.
Avoid destructive first steps
Do not delete SearchHost.exe, disable critical services without knowing the effect, or edit the Registry as the first move.
