What you need to know
FancyZones is snapping layouts, not PowerToys Run.
PowerToys.FancyZones.exe is the zone snap engine. Shift-drag or the FancyZones overlay places windows. PowerToys.PowerLauncher.exe is Run. Ending FancyZones does not close the Alt+Space box.

What is PowerToys.FancyZones.exe?
PowerToys.FancyZones.exe is snapping layouts, not PowerToys Run. The runner is still PowerToys.exe. dwm.exe still composes the desktop.
What does it do?
It holds zone layouts and snaps windows into them. It does not search apps. PowerLauncher does that.
Why is it running?
FancyZones is enabled in PowerToys. The editor window is this utility. A PC that only uses Run should not keep this image resident.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
A Microsoft-signed FancyZones under PowerToys is the snap engine. FancyZones.exe in a "window manager" zip is not. This is still not PowerLauncher.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Program Files\PowerToys\PowerToys.FancyZones.exe
- Snap / zone engine
- Editor is part of this utility
- Not PowerToys.PowerLauncher.exe
Can I end it?
Custom zones stop
Ending FancyZones returns you to ordinary Windows snap. Run can stay. Disable the module in PowerToys Settings if you do not want it back.
Can I remove it?
Turn off FancyZones, or uninstall PowerToys
Disable FancyZones in settings. Deleting the exe breaks that module. Uninstalling Run is the wrong toggle.
Should it start with Windows?
The runner starts FancyZones when the module is on. It is not a Startup Apps row named FancyZones.

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Low except while dragging through the overlay

Common problems
Windows snap and FancyZones fight
Turn off overlapping snap settings in FancyZones. That is this module. PowerLauncher will not change snap.
People end Run to stop zones
Alt+Space is PowerLauncher. Zones are this process.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
PowerToys Settings > FancyZones
Edit layouts or disable the module. Run settings will not move a zone.
Hold the FancyZones override key while dragging
Microsoft documents Shift as the common override. If the window ignores zones, this exe is not running or the module is off.
