node.exe
Also called node, nodejs, node.js
Node.js runtime. It is not a Windows component, not WSL, and not python.exe.
What you need to know
node.exe is the Node runtime, not WSL and not python.
node.exe is Node.js from the official installer, nvm, or a vendor bundle. It is not wsl.exe and not the WSL2 VM. python.exe is CPython. Ending node stops that JavaScript runtime, not Ubuntu and not Python.
- Safe?
- The runtime is. The script may not be
- Is it WSL?
- No. This is a Windows Node install
- Same as python?
- No. This is Node.js
What is node.exe?
node.exe is the Node runtime, not WSL and not python. Official builds live under Program Files\nodejs or an nvm folder. Linux Node inside Ubuntu is a different binary in the distro, seen on the host as vmmemWSL, not this image.
What does it do?
It runs JavaScript (and related Node tooling) for that install. It does not interpret .py and it does not start WslService.
Why is it running?
npm, a dev server, VS Code, or an Electron helper launched this runtime. No Node install means this filename should not be a Microsoft System32 file.
Why are there multiple copies?
Several node.exe copies are several apps or nvm versions. That is still Node, not several python.exe interpreters and not several WSL services.
Is it safe?
Runtime is legitimate. Script is the question
A signed Node.js node.exe under Program Files\nodejs or a known nvm path is the runtime. A node.exe in Temp is the story. This is still not python.exe and not wsl.exe.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Program Files\nodejs\node.exe
- Publisher: Node.js / OpenJS, not Microsoft Windows
- nvm-windows uses a different versioned folder
- Not System32\wsl.exe and not python.exe
Can I end it?
Stops that Node process
Ending node.exe kills that runtime. WSL can stay. python.exe can stay. A watch script can start another node.
Can I remove it?
Uninstall Node, not WSL
Uninstall Node.js from Apps or remove that nvm version. Do not delete System32. Uninstalling WSL does not remove a Windows node.exe.
Should it start with Windows?
A Startup npm script can start it. That is vendor or you, not an inbox Windows service.
Normal resource behavior
These are contextual labels, not universal averages.
- CPU
- Follows the JS program
- Memory
- Dev servers and bundlers can grow large
- Disk
- node_modules and the app
- Network
- Localhost or outbound, if the app listens

Common problems
A Linux npm inside WSL, but they end this Windows node.exe
WSL Node lives in the distro. Host RAM is vmmemWSL. This file is a Windows install.
People uninstall Python to stop a node hang
Wrong runtime. Check the command line for server.js or npm. python.exe is CPython.
Troubleshooting
Diagnose before you change anything destructive.
where.exe node and node -v
Confirm Program Files\nodejs versus nvm versus a project copy. where.exe python is a different install.
If the work was inside Ubuntu, use wsl -l -v, not this exe
wsl --shutdown stops the VM. Ending a Windows node.exe will not stop Linux Node.
