calc.exe
Also called calc, calculator shim, legacy calculator
Calculator launch shim. On current Windows it starts the Store Calculator. It is not Paint and it is not the CalculatorApp.exe window by itself.
What you need to know
calc.exe launches Calculator, it is not mspaint.
calc.exe is the historic Calculator name in System32. Current Windows uses it as a shim that starts CalculatorApp.exe in WindowsApps. mspaint.exe is Paint.
- Safe?
- Yes, in System32
- Is it Paint?
- No. Paint is mspaint.exe
- Should I end it?
- The launch may already have handed off
What is calc.exe?
calc.exe launches Calculator. It is not mspaint.exe. On current Windows the visible app is often CalculatorApp.exe under WindowsApps.
What does it do?
It resolves the Calculator app execution alias and starts the Store app. It does not edit bitmaps and it does not host the full Calculator UI alone.
Why is it running?
You ran calc, Win+R calc, or a shortcut still named Calculator. The shim can exit after CalculatorApp.exe is up.
Is it safe?
Usually safe
System32 calc.exe is the Microsoft shim. A calc.exe next to a crack is not Calculator.
A legitimate copy normally runs from:
C:\Windows\System32\calc.exe
- Launch shim on current Windows
- UI is often CalculatorApp.exe
- Not mspaint.exe
Can I end it?
Usually already handed off
Ending calc.exe after the window is open may do nothing. End CalculatorApp.exe if you meant to close Calculator.
Can I remove it?
No
Do not delete calc.exe. Uninstall Calculator from Apps if you want the Store app gone. The shim is still a system alias.
Should it start with Windows?
On demand. A Startup calc is a shortcut you added.
