XAMPP
Also called xampp control, apache friends
A local Apache, MySQL or MariaDB, PHP, and Perl stack for learning. The control panel is xampp-control.exe. It is not a production server.
What you need to know
XAMPP is a local learning stack, not a production server.
xampp-control.exe starts bundled Apache and MySQL or MariaDB. It is meant for development. Docker Desktop, a full MySQL install, and a hosted PHP host are different products.

What is XAMPP?
XAMPP is a bundled local Apache, database, and PHP stack. It is not a hardened production server and not Docker Desktop.
If you have never used it
If a PHP class said install XAMPP, get it from apachefriends.org/download.html. xampp-control.exe starts Apache and the bundled database on your PC. It is for learning. Do not put it on the public internet as your production host. A full MySQL or PostgreSQL install is a different server product.
What is it used for?
http://localhost from the htdocs folder. A production vhost on Linux is a different job.
xampp-control.exe toggles httpd.exe and mysqld.exe. The official MySQL Installer is a different stack.
A learning GUI. MySQL Workbench can also connect. Production still wants a real ops story.
Who is it for?
- Students learning PHP
- People who need a quick local WordPress
- Anyone who should not expose this stack to the internet
Current status
XAMPP (2002) is a current local web stack from Apache Friends. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.apachefriends.org/download.html.
How old is it?
Apache Friends shipped XAMPP in 2002 so students could run Apache and PHP without a Linux box. It is older than Docker Desktop as the default local stack. Current Windows builds still exist. A 1.7-era USB copy is stale.

Common problems
Port 80 or 443 already in use
IIS, Skype-era leftovers, or another Apache can steal the port. That is a local conflict, not a production outage.
People leave it reachable from the LAN
Apache Friends documents this as a development environment. Do not treat it as a hardened server.
Getting unstuck
Install from apachefriends.org/download.html
Apache Friends hosts the real installer. A XAMPP pack with extra toolbars is junk.
Use the Control Panel to read the log, not Event Viewer first
httpd and mysqld messages show why a module failed. That is this stack.
Change the Apache port in the panel if 80 is taken
That setting is XAMPP. It does not reconfigure a production IIS site.
Alternatives
Docker Desktop if the class moved to containers. Official MySQL plus PHP if you want separate products. PostgreSQL if the class is not MySQL.

Related hardware
A current PC is enough for coursework. The bundled database wants disk. This is not a reason to buy a server GPU.
