WeChat

ApplicationTencent

Also called weixin, wechat desktop

TencentProductivity

Tencent's messenger required for many China-facing accounts. On Windows the process is WeChat.exe.

What you need to know

WeChat is Tencent's later messenger. It is not WhatsApp.

WeChat.exe is the Windows client. WhatsApp is Meta. QQ is Tencent's older IM. QR login still starts on the phone.

Feex says
If WeChat.exe is running, I treat it as WeChat, not WhatsApp and not QQ. Closing QQ.exe does not sign you out of WeChat.

What is WeChat?

WeChat for Windows is Tencent's desktop messenger. Mini programs and official accounts are WeChat features. The executable is WeChat.exe.

If you have never used it

If a China-facing account said add me on WeChat, this is Tencent WeChat (Weixin), not WhatsApp. Download the Windows client from windows.weixin.qq.com. The process is WeChat.exe. QR login starts from the phone. QQ is Tencent's older IM network.

What is it used for?

Chats and official accounts

Personal threads plus subscription accounts. WhatsApp does not host these official accounts.

China-facing logins

Many services ask for a WeChat QR. That is why the desktop app stays installed.

File and voice messages

Media in the WeChat thread. It is not a Windows share folder.

Who is it for?

  • People who need WeChat for work or family in China-facing networks
  • Users who already scan WeChat QR codes on the phone
  • Anyone who mixed it up with WhatsApp or QQ

Current status

WeChat (2011) is a current chat from Tencent. The vendor still points Windows users at https://windows.weixin.qq.com/.

How old is it?

WeChat launched in 2011. International branding is WeChat. The Chinese client is Weixin. It is newer than QQ (1999) and not a WhatsApp clone from 2009.

Common problems

Desktop login stuck on QR

The phone WeChat app must scan. That is the product flow, not a dead webcam driver by itself.

People uninstall QQ to remove WeChat

They are separate Tencent apps. WeChat.exe stays.

Getting unstuck

Install from windows.weixin.qq.com

A WeChat English crack is junk. Tencent hosts the Windows build.

Scan with the phone WeChat, not the camera app alone

The in-app scanner is the supported path.

Quit WeChat.exe from the tray

Closing the window can leave the desktop client resident.

Alternatives

WhatsApp if the group is not on WeChat. QQ if the contact is on the older Tencent IM. LINE if the region is Japan or Taiwan instead.
