VIPRE
Also called vipre antivirus, sunbelt vipre, sbamsvc
A consumer and MSP antivirus. The service is SBAMSvc.exe from the Sunbelt lineage. It is not Windows Security.
What you need to know
SBAMSvc.exe is VIPRE's Sunbelt-era service. It should take Defender's slot.
VIPRE is a Ziff Davis antivirus with consumer and MSP SKUs. SBAMSvc.exe is a usual process. Two live engines with Windows Security is the fight. It is not CrowdStrike and not a home download of Falcon.
- What is it?
- Consumer and MSP AV. Service is SBAMSvc.exe
- Sunbelt?
- Old name in the exe. Ziff Davis sells it now
- Plus Defender?
- No. One live engine
What is VIPRE?
VIPRE is a consumer and MSP antivirus. SBAMSvc.exe is a common Windows service name. Ziff Davis is the current owner.
If you have never used it
If the tray says VIPRE, this is the Sunbelt-line suite Ziff Davis owns, not Defender. Download consumer builds from vipre.com. SBAMSvc.exe is the service name from the old Sunbelt AntiMalware days. MSP partners deploy a different console. VIPRE should take the antivirus slot. SBAMSvc.exe plus live MsMpEng.exe is the two-engine fight.
What is it used for?
The home install registers as the active engine so Defender can go passive.
A technician may install VIPRE without a vipre.com shopping trip. That agent is still this vendor, not Defender.
Thicker SKUs add extras. The service can still be SBAMSvc.exe.
Who is it for?
- Households that bought VIPRE
- People whose MSP left SBAMSvc.exe on the PC
- Anyone with VIPRE plus live Defender
Current status
Actively sold. This article is the Windows consumer or MSP agent, not a Ziff Davis magazine.
How old is it?
VIPRE came out of Sunbelt Software in the late 2000s. Ownership moved through J2 / Ziff Davis. Current pages still say VIPRE. A 2008 Sunbelt box is the same lineage.

Common problems
SBAMSvc.exe plus live Defender
VIPRE should own realtime. If Defender still scans, both engines are live.
MSP leftover after you left that shop
The partner agent can stay. Uninstall with their instructions or vipre.com support, not Explorer deletes.
Getting unstuck
Install or remove via vipre.com or the MSP portal you were given
A "VIPRE crack" host is not Ziff Davis.
Check Windows Security for VIPRE
The owner should name VIPRE after a successful register.
Do not add a second consumer suite
VIPRE plus Norton is two engines.
Alternatives
Windows Security if you drop VIPRE. The MSP may require their agent on a work PC. CrowdStrike is enterprise EDR, not a VIPRE substitute you download yourself.
