Todoist
Also called todoist app, doist todoist
A cross-platform task list with a Windows desktop app. The process is Todoist.exe. It is not Microsoft To Do.
What you need to know
Todoist is Doist. Microsoft To Do is Todo.exe and a different account.
Todoist.exe talks to todoist.com. Microsoft To Do replaced Wunderlist and uses a Microsoft account. Installing both does not merge the task lists.

What is Todoist?
Todoist is Doist's task manager. Todoist.exe is the Windows desktop app. Microsoft To Do is Todo.exe and a different account graph.
If you have never used it
If your tasks already live in Todoist projects and filters, this is Doist's app, not Microsoft To Do. Download the Windows client from todoist.com/downloads. You can use Todoist in a browser. Todo.exe is Microsoft To Do and syncs through a Microsoft account. The two lists do not merge.
What is it used for?
Nested projects, labels, and Todoist filters. To Do uses lists and My Day instead.
Doist-specific streaks and natural-language recur. That is not a To Do reminder.
The Windows app keeps a tray presence. The website skips that tray.
Who is it for?
- People whose GTD system already lives in Todoist
- Users who want the same tasks on phone and PC
- Anyone who should not sign into To Do expecting those projects
Current status
Actively developed. This article is the Windows desktop app, not the browser-only view.
How old is it?
Doist launched Todoist in 2012. It is older than Microsoft To Do (2017) and not the Wunderlist line Microsoft shut down. The Windows desktop app is a later wrapper around the same Todoist account.

Common problems
Two task apps after a work PC setup
To Do may appear from a Microsoft account. Todoist is optional. Pick one list for daily work.
Notifications while the browser tab is closed
You need the desktop app or the mobile app. The website only notifies while it is open.
Getting unstuck
Sign in with the Todoist account, not a Microsoft account
A work Microsoft login opens To Do. Todoist has its own email login or Google/Apple SSO that still creates a Doist account.
Install from todoist.com/downloads
A "Todoist desktop" MSI from a search ad is the wrong file.
Use the website if the Electron wrapper is stuck
todoist.com is the same projects. Restarting Windows will not merge To Do tasks into them.
Alternatives
Microsoft To Do, TickTick, and a paper list overlap. To Do is the Microsoft sibling this article is not.

Related hardware
The desktop app is light compared with a meeting client. RAM follows how many views you leave open.
