Telegram
Also called telegram desktop, tg
A cloud chat client with a native Windows desktop app. The process is Telegram.exe.
What you need to know
Telegram is cloud chat. It is not WhatsApp.
Telegram Desktop is Telegram.exe. WhatsApp is a different vendor and a different account model. Extra Telegram helpers are still this product.

What is Telegram?
Telegram Desktop is Telegram FZ-LLC's Windows client. Profiles and cache live under AppData. It is not WhatsApp and not Signal.
If you have never used it
If someone sent a t.me link, this is Telegram, not WhatsApp. Chats sync in Telegram's cloud. Download Telegram Desktop from desktop.telegram.org. The process is Telegram.exe. WhatsApp is a phone-number app with a different desktop client.
What is it used for?
History follows the account across PCs. WhatsApp desktop is a companion to the phone in a different way.
Telegram documents high file-size limits. That is a Telegram habit, not a Windows share folder.
Device-to-device secret chats are a Telegram mode. They are not the default cloud chat.
Who is it for?
- People whose groups already live on Telegram
- Users who want a desktop client that syncs cloud history
- Anyone who was handed a t.me link and thought it was WhatsApp
Current status
Telegram (2013) is a current chat from Telegram FZ-LLC. The vendor still points Windows users at https://desktop.telegram.org/.
How old is it?
Telegram launched in 2013 as a cloud messenger. The Windows desktop app is native, not the phone WebView. It is newer than WhatsApp (2009) and not a 2021 Discord clone.

Common problems
Cache growth under AppData
Media cache can get large. Telegram settings have a cache clear. Do not delete AppData while the app is running.
People hunt WhatsApp.exe to quit Telegram
Wrong exe. Telegram.exe is this client.
Getting unstuck
Install from desktop.telegram.org
A Telegram portable from a forum is a common junk path. The official Windows build is on Telegram's desktop page.
Sign in with the phone QR or code Telegram shows
There is no WhatsApp QR on this app. A Microsoft account will not open Telegram.
Quit from the tray
Closing the window can leave Telegram.exe in the tray. That is a Telegram setting.
Alternatives
WhatsApp if your contacts are there. Signal if you want that encryption product. Discord if the group already lives in a server.
Official help and downloads
Start with the vendor. Random exe sites are not a support channel.

Related hardware
A modest CPU is enough for chat. Video calls want a working camera and headset.
