Tailscale
Also called tail scale, tailnet, tailscale-ipn
A WireGuard mesh for your own devices. The GUI is tailscale-ipn.exe. It is not a consumer streaming-region VPN.
What you need to know
Tailscale is a device mesh. It is not a streaming-region VPN.
tailscale-ipn.exe joins a tailnet of machines you control. WireGuard is underneath. NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark are consumer country VPNs. The official WireGuard app still needs a server you run.

What is Tailscale?
Tailscale is a WireGuard-based mesh for your devices. tailscale-ipn.exe is the Windows GUI. It is not a country-hop consumer VPN.
If you have never used it
If you wanted your laptop to reach your own PC or NAS, Tailscale is that mesh, not NordVPN. Download it from tailscale.com/download/windows. tailscale-ipn.exe is the tray GUI. You sign in with an identity provider and join a tailnet of machines you control. There is no Netflix-region server list. WireGuard is the protocol underneath. You still need Tailscale's coordination, not only wireguard.exe.
What is it used for?
SSH, RDP, or a NAS on your tailnet. That is not a London server for a streaming catalog.
You log in with Google, Microsoft, or another IdP Tailscale lists. NordVPN uses a Nord account instead.
An exit node is a machine you own or approve. It is not Nord's country list.
Who is it for?
- People who want a mesh to their own PCs
- Homelab and small-team users
- Anyone who should not install this to unblock a streaming region
Current status
Actively developed. This article is the Windows client, not Tailscale Funnel marketing pages alone.
How old is it?
Tailscale launched in 2019 as a WireGuard mesh. It is not a 2012 consumer streaming VPN. Current Windows clients need Windows 10 or later, or Windows Server 2016 or later, per Tailscale.

Common problems
No country list for streaming
That is expected. Tailscale is not NordVPN. Use a consumer VPN if you wanted a region hop, or an exit node you actually own.
Logged in, cannot see a machine
The other device must run Tailscale on the same tailnet. This is not a public VPN server.
Getting unstuck
Install from tailscale.com/download/windows
wireguard.com is the bare client. nordvpn.com is a consumer VPN.
Sign in and check the tailnet name
A personal tailnet will not show a work machine on another org.
Do not expect a Netflix-region picker
If that is the job, you installed the wrong class of product.
Alternatives
NordVPN or ExpressVPN for a consumer country VPN. WireGuard.exe if you already have your own server and configs. OpenVPN if IT handed you an .ovpn.
