Opera
Also called opera browser, opera software
A Chromium browser from Opera Norway with a sidebar and long pre-Chromium history. On Windows the process is opera.exe.
What you need to know
Opera is a Chromium browser. opera.exe is not chrome.exe and not Opera GX.
Opera Norway ships a Chromium browser with a sidebar, Workspaces, and marketed built-in VPN. Extra opera.exe rows are tabs and helpers. Opera GX is a separate install with RAM and CPU limiters.
- What is it?
- A Chromium browser with a sidebar
- Same as Chrome?
- Same engine family, different product
- Same as Opera GX?
- No. GX is the gaming-skinned sibling
What is Opera?
Opera is Opera Norway's Chromium desktop browser. The Windows executable is opera.exe. Profiles live under AppData, not in Google\Chrome.
If you have never used it
If someone said "install Opera", this is the regular Opera browser, not Opera GX. Download it from opera.com/download. You get a Chromium engine, a left sidebar, and Opera account sync. Windows already has Edge. Extra opera.exe rows are tabs and helpers, not a second copy of Windows. Opera GX is a different Start tile with RAM and CPU sliders.
What is it used for?
Daily tabs on Chromium. Site compatibility is Chrome-class, not Gecko.
Pinned messengers and tab groups Opera ships in the chrome. Chrome does not use this sidebar layout.
Opera advertises a limited free VPN. That is an Opera feature, not a system VPN adapter you configure in Windows Settings.
Who is it for?
- People who want Chromium with Opera sidebar tools
- Users who already have an Opera account
- Anyone comparing opera.exe with chrome.exe by path, not by logo
Current status
Actively developed on a Chromium cadence. This article is the regular Windows desktop browser, not Opera GX, Opera Mini, or Opera Air.
How old is it?
Opera 1 shipped in 1995 on its own Presto engine. In 2013 Opera rebuilt on Chromium. The current Windows app is that Chromium product. A 2004 Presto screenshot is history, not what opera.exe is today.
Versions

Common problems
People close chrome.exe to fix Opera
Wrong exe. Opera is opera.exe under Programs\Opera. Chrome is chrome.exe under Google.
Sidebar messengers stay after the last tab
Pinned sidebar apps can keep helpers alive. That is Opera UI, not a second browser.
Getting unstuck
Open Opera built-in task manager
Shift+Esc inside Opera names the heavy tab. Ending a random opera.exe in Windows Task Manager can close the wrong helper.
Confirm the folder says Opera, not Opera GX
Programs\Opera is this product. Programs\Opera GX is the gaming sibling with GX Control sliders.
Install only from opera.com/download
Search ads for "Opera free browser" are a common junk path. The real installer is on Opera's site.
Alternatives
Opera GX if you want the limiter skin. Chrome, Edge, and Firefox cover the same daily job with different vendors and sync.

Related hardware
RAM and a working GPU matter more than a famous CPU name. Sidebar apps add to the Chromium tab bill.
