What you need to know

NordPass.exe is the vault. NordVPN.exe is the VPN.

NordPass is Nord Security's password manager. It is not NordVPN, not Surfshark, and not Bitwarden. Watchtower is a 1Password name. A KeePass kdbx is a local file with no Nord account.

If NordPass.exe is missing and only NordVPN.exe is installed, I would download Pass from nordpass.com. The VPN does not hold your vault. I would not call this 1Password, and I would not use it as a Netflix-region tool.

If you have never used it

If you wanted the Nord password vault, this is NordPass, not NordVPN. Download it from nordpass.com/download/windows. NordPass.exe stores logins. NordVPN.exe is the tunnel app. They are different installs from Nord Security. It is not Bitwarden, not 1Password, and not a streaming-region tool by itself.

What is it used for?

Nord-account vault

You can share a Nord account family, but Pass and VPN remain two apps. Bitwarden is a different vendor.

Autofill on Windows

NordPass.exe and its extension fill forms. NordVPN's kill switch does not fill passwords.

Data breach scanner in Pass

NordPass names its own scanner. That is not 1Password Watchtower and not NordVPN Threat Protection.

Who is it for?

People who bought a Nord bundle and still need the vault app
Users who installed only NordVPN and cannot find passwords
Anyone who should not treat NordPass as Bitwarden

Current status

Actively developed. This article is NordPass on Windows, not NordVPN, NordLocker, or Surfshark.

How old is it?

Nord Security launched NordPass in 2019, years after NordVPN (2012). Current Windows builds are a separate app. A NordVPN-only folder will not contain your vault.

Common problems

VPN installed, vault missing

NordVPN.exe cannot open NordPass items. Install NordPass from nordpass.com.

People call every Nord app NordVPN

Locker, Pass, and VPN are different products. The exe name tells you which one.

Getting unstuck

Open NordPass.exe, not NordVPN.exe

File location should say NordPass. Program Files\NordVPN is the tunnel.

Sign in on nordpass.com credentials

A VPN login box will not show vault items even if the email matches.

Do not expect Watchtower

That label is 1Password. Use NordPass's own breach tools or export.

Alternatives

NordVPN if you meant the tunnel. Bitwarden or 1Password if you want those vaults. KeePass if you want a local kdbx.
