What you need to know

- What is it?
- A one-shot installer builder
- Keep it installed?
- No. The page is the product
- Same as winget?
- No. winget is a client you keep
What is Ninite?
Ninite.exe is a custom installer the website generated for your checkbox set. There is no always-on ninite service. choco.exe and winget.exe stay on the PC as managers. This file is a one-shot.
If you have never used it
If you want Chrome, 7-Zip, and VLC in one click, Ninite is the web page that builds a bundle. Check boxes on ninite.com and download Ninite.exe. Run it once. It is not a package manager you keep like winget or Chocolatey. The page is the product.
What is it used for?
The website is the catalog. Chocolatey and WinGet keep a client installed.
It installs the apps you ticked, usually without extra junk. It does not become a daily upgrade CLI.
That paid SKU is still Ninite. It is not winget upgrade --all.
Who is it for?
- People setting up a family PC
- Technicians who want a known-good bundle
- Anyone who should switch to winget or Chocolatey if they want ongoing CLI upgrades
Current status
Ninite (2009) is a current one-shot installer builder from Ninite. The vendor still points Windows users at https://ninite.com/.
How old is it?
Ninite launched in 2009, before winget and around Chocolatey's early years. The model stayed "pick apps, download one exe." Current Windows users still use it for a new PC. It is not an in-box store.

Common problems
People keep an old Ninite.exe for years
The bundle is a snapshot of what you ticked. Build a new one on ninite.com. winget stays current as a client.
An app Ninite does not list
Use winget or the vendor site. Ninite's catalog is curated and short on purpose.
Getting unstuck
Build the installer on ninite.com, not a "Ninite pack" from a forum
The official exe comes from that page. Chocolatey is the other community path if you wanted choco.
Run the new Ninite.exe as administrator if installs skip
One-shot elevation is normal. This is not scoop.cmd in a user folder.
If you wanted repeat upgrades, install winget or Chocolatey after the first Ninite pass
Ninite Pro exists for shops. The free page is still a builder, not a daily CLI.
Alternatives
WinGet and Chocolatey for a kept client. Scoop for user-folder tools. The Store for Store apps.
