Nextcloud
Also called nextcloud desktop, owncloud cousin
A self-hosted sync client. You need a Nextcloud server. The process is nextcloud.exe. It is not Dropbox.
What you need to know
Nextcloud needs your server. Dropbox is a hosted vendor cloud.
nextcloud.exe syncs to a Nextcloud URL you already have. Dropbox.exe will not accept that URL. Without a server, this client has nowhere to go.

What is Nextcloud?
Nextcloud is self-hosted file sync. nextcloud.exe is the Windows client. Dropbox is a vendor-hosted cloud. You cannot sign into Nextcloud with only a Dropbox account.
If you have never used it
If you run or join a Nextcloud server, this is the desktop client, not Dropbox. Download nextcloud.exe from nextcloud.com/install. You must type a server URL. Dropbox.exe talks to Dropbox's cloud. There is no Nextcloud folder without a server. ownCloud is a related older fork story, not this GmbH product alone.
What is it used for?
A folder that mirrors a Nextcloud account. Dropbox cannot use that URL.
Placeholder support the client documents. That is still your server, not Dropbox Smart Sync.
The desktop client is files-first. Extra Nextcloud apps live on the server, not in Dropbox.
Who is it for?
- People who have a Nextcloud URL
- Homelab and school servers
- Anyone who should not install Dropbox expecting a self-hosted folder
Current status
Actively developed. This article is the Windows desktop client. The server is a separate install.
How old is it?
Nextcloud GmbH forked from ownCloud in 2016. Dropbox is a 2008 hosted service. A Nextcloud client without a server URL does nothing useful. That is the sibling-swap test with Dropbox.
Versions
Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.
System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

Common problems
Client installed with no server
The wizard waits for a URL. Dropbox-style email signup will not create a Nextcloud host.
Certificate or URL typos
Self-signed or LAN names fail TLS. That is a server problem, not a Dropbox outage.
Getting unstuck
Get the server URL from the admin before you debug Windows
nextcloud.exe cannot invent a host. dropbox.com is the wrong destination.
Install the client from nextcloud.com/install
A "Nextcloud sync" search ad is the wrong file.
Match client and server major versions if sync is rejected
Nextcloud documents compatibility. That is not a Dropbox version pin.
Alternatives
Dropbox, ownCloud, and Syncthing overlap. Dropbox is hosted. Syncthing is peer-to-peer without a Nextcloud server.
Official help and downloads
Start with the vendor. Random exe sites are not a support channel.

Related hardware
Sync follows the server and the disk. A tiny VPS can be the bottleneck, not the PC.
