MusicBee
Also called music bee
A local library player with strong tag tools. The process is MusicBee.exe. It is not foobar2000.
What you need to know
MusicBee is a tag-heavy local player. foobar2000 is the component cousin.
MusicBee.exe ships a full library UI. foobar2000 starts plainer and grows with components. Both play folders you already own.
- What is it?
- A local library player with strong tag tools
- Same as foobar2000?
- No. MusicBee ships the library UI up front
- Costs money?
- The author publishes it as freeware
What is MusicBee?
MusicBee is a Windows library player focused on tags, filters, and a polished local UI. MusicBee.exe is the process.
If you have never used it
If you want a free local player with serious tag editing and a Theatre mode, this is MusicBee. Download it from getmusicbee.com/downloads. Point it at your music folder. It is not foobar2000. foobar is components and a plain default. MusicBee ships a fuller library UI and tag tools as the main story.
What is it used for?
Batch tags, artwork, and filters. MediaMonkey also organizes. foobar2000 can tag via components. MusicBee puts this in the default window.
Play files you already have. There is no Spotify catalog.
Optional full-screen Theatre and scrobble features the help describes. That is still a local player, not a store.
Who is it for?
- People who live in tags and want a free UI for it
- Users comparing MusicBee with foobar2000 and MediaMonkey
- Anyone who should download only from getmusicbee.com
Current status
MusicBee (2008) is a current local music player from Steven Mayall. The vendor still points Windows users at https://getmusicbee.com/downloads/.
How old is it?
Steven Mayall released MusicBee in 2008, after foobar2000 and AIMP already existed. It is a late-2000s local player, not a streaming startup. A “MusicBee Plus codec pack” listing is junk, not the author.

Common problems
Unofficial installer
The author hosts builds on getmusicbee.com. Portal extras are the usual toolbar story.
Library missing after a move
Point MusicBee at the new folder. The player does not follow files the way a streaming locker does.
Getting unstuck
Install from getmusicbee.com/downloads
That is the official Windows build. A MusicBee.exe on a forum is the wrong file.
Rebuild the library if tags look empty
Help documents a rescan. That is faster than a Windows reinstall.
Check output device before replacing a DAC
Preferences > player. A wrong endpoint is a MusicBee setting.
Alternatives
foobar2000 for components. MediaMonkey for auto-organize. AIMP for skins.
