McAfee
Also called mcafee antivirus, mcafee live, mcafee total protection
An OEM-bundled consumer suite. People search it when a trial nag appears. McUICnt.exe is a common UI process. It is not Windows Security.
What you need to know
McAfee is the OEM nag suite. Trellix is the work split.
Consumer McAfee ships on many new PCs as a trial. McUICnt.exe is a common UI process. The trial plus live Defender is a two-engine mess. Trellix is the enterprise product from the same history, not this download.
- What is it?
- OEM-bundled consumer AV
- Why the nag?
- Trial expired. Not a virus by itself
- Same as Trellix?
- No. Trellix is the enterprise split
What is McAfee?
McAfee is the consumer suite that ships as an OEM trial on many PCs. McUICnt.exe is a usual UI process. Trellix is the enterprise split.
If you have never used it
If a new PC nags McAfee, that is usually an OEM trial, not a virus named McUICnt.exe. Download or manage it from mcafee.com. Consumer McAfee is Musarubra. Enterprise Trellix is the split-off work product. The trial plus still-live Defender is the two-engine fight. Uninstall the trial if you will use Windows Security instead.
What is it used for?
The preinstall registers as antivirus until it expires and nags. That nag is licensing, not malware.
VPN and identity extras sit in paid bundles. The trial may only be the antivirus seat.
Browser add-ons are McAfee extras. They are not Edge and not Defender SmartScreen.
Who is it for?
- People hunting the McAfee nag on a new laptop
- Users who paid and still see Defender live
- Anyone who confused consumer McAfee with Trellix at work
Current status
Actively sold as consumer McAfee under Musarubra. This article is not Trellix Endpoint.
How old is it?
John McAfee's company dates to 1987. Intel owned it, then the consumer brand stayed McAfee while enterprise became Trellix. Musarubra is the current consumer owner. A 1990s VirusScan floppy is not this nag.

System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.
Minimum

|---|---|
| RAM | McAfee lists a 2 GB class minimum on many pages. OEM trials still feel heavy on 4 GB laptops |

Common problems
Trial nag plus live Defender
Expired McAfee can keep UI processes while Defender also scans. Uninstall the trial or finish the purchase so one owner remains.
WebAdvisor leftover after uninstall
Browser extensions can survive the suite. Remove them in the browser, not by deleting System32.
Getting unstuck
Use McAfee Consumer Product Removal if Apps will not clear it
McAfee documents MCPR for stubborn OEM installs. Settings > Apps is the first try.
Check Windows Security after removal
Defender should become the owner again. If the page still names McAfee, a leftover service is registered.
Do not download Trellix for a home nag
Trellix is the enterprise line. Home users want mcafee.com or an uninstall, not a work sensor.
Alternatives
Windows Security after you remove the trial. Do not stack McAfee on Norton just because both came in mailers.
