JetBrains Toolbox
Also called toolbox app, jetbrains toolbox app
JetBrains' installer and updater for its IDEs. The process is jetbrains-toolbox.exe. It is not a single IDE.
What you need to know
Toolbox installs JetBrains IDEs. It is not the IDE itself.
jetbrains-toolbox.exe is the JetBrains installer tray. idea64.exe is IntelliJ. pycharm64.exe is PyCharm. rider64.exe is Rider. Uninstalling Toolbox does not always remove every IDE it installed.

- Is it IntelliJ?
- No. It can install IntelliJ
- Need it?
- Only if you want this manager
What is JetBrains Toolbox?
JetBrains Toolbox is an installer and updater. It is not idea64.exe, not pycharm64.exe, and not a compiler.
If you have never used it
If you run more than one JetBrains IDE, Toolbox is the tray app that installs and updates them. Download it from jetbrains.com/toolbox-app. jetbrains-toolbox.exe is not IntelliJ, not PyCharm, and not Rider. Those IDEs keep their own exe names after Toolbox installs them.
What is it used for?
IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm, Rider, and others. The IDE process is still idea64.exe or the matching name.
Channel and version picks. Windows Settings > Apps is a clumsier path for these IDEs.
Licenses for paid IDEs. Toolbox does not replace a Community edition license screen inside the IDE.
Who is it for?
- People who keep several JetBrains IDEs
- Users who want one-click updates
- Anyone who thought Toolbox was IntelliJ
Current status
JetBrains Toolbox (2016) is a current ide installer from JetBrains. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.jetbrains.com/toolbox-app/.
How old is it?
JetBrains launched Toolbox in 2016 so people would stop juggling standalone installers. It is younger than IntelliJ (2001) and PyCharm (2010). Current Toolbox builds still manage 2024/2025-line IDEs.

Common problems
People close Toolbox and think IntelliJ is gone
The IDE is a separate folder. Toolbox is the manager.
Two copies of the same IDE
A leftover standalone installer plus Toolbox can both exist. The About box names the path.
Getting unstuck
Install from jetbrains.com/toolbox-app
JetBrains hosts the real Toolbox. A toolbox helper exe from a pack is junk.
Open Toolbox to see which IDEs it manages
idea64.exe will not list WebStorm unless you installed that IDE.
Use Toolbox to uninstall an IDE if that is how you installed it
Settings > Apps may show both Toolbox and the IDE.
Alternatives
Standalone installers from each product page. VS Code if you do not want JetBrains. Visual Studio is devenv.exe and a different vendor.
