GeForce NOW

ApplicationNVIDIA

Also called gfn, geforce now client

NVIDIAGames

NVIDIA's cloud game streaming client. The game runs in NVIDIA's datacenter. The process is GeForceNOW.exe. It is not the NVIDIA driver app.

What you need to know

GeForce NOW streams from a datacenter. NVIDIA App only talks to the GPU in this PC.

GeForceNOW.exe is the cloud client. The game process is not local. NVIDIA App and the display driver are a different stack for cards you actually installed.

What is it?
NVIDIA cloud game streaming
Does the game run here?
No. It runs in NVIDIA’s datacenter
Same as NVIDIA App?
No. That is the local driver companion
Feex says
If GeForceNOW.exe is open, the game is in NVIDIA’s datacenter. I would not update the local Game Ready driver to fix a GFN queue, and I would not treat this as the NVIDIA overlay app.

What is GeForce NOW?

GeForce NOW is NVIDIA’s cloud gaming client. GeForceNOW.exe starts a remote session. The title runs in NVIDIA’s datacenter, not as a local game process.

If you have never used it

If you want to play a Steam or other supported store game on a weak PC by streaming it from NVIDIA’s machines, this is GeForce NOW. Download the client from nvidia.com/geforce-now. Sign in, link the store NVIDIA lists, and start a session. The game exe is not on this disk. It is not NVIDIA App, not GeForce Experience, and not the Game Ready driver installer.

What is it used for?

Stream a linked store game

Play a title you already own on a store NVIDIA supports. Steam still owns that license. GFN only streams the session.

Play on a weak GPU

The heavy render happens in the datacenter. NVIDIA App still only talks to the GPU in this PC, which is the wrong tool for this job.

Membership queues

Free and paid GFN tiers change queue and session length. That is a GeForce NOW plan, not a Game Ready driver channel.

Who is it for?

  • People who own store games and want to stream them on a laptop that cannot run them
  • GFN members who already linked Steam or another supported store
  • Anyone who opened NVIDIA App looking for a cloud session

Current status

GeForce NOW (2015) is a current cloud game streaming from NVIDIA. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.nvidia.com/geforce-now/.

How old is it?

NVIDIA ran GRID-style streaming earlier and launched GeForce NOW as a consumer brand in the mid-2010s, then a 2020 wider launch. It is newer than Steam 2003 and newer than the local NVIDIA Control Panel. A 2013 GeForce Experience “optimize” guide is the local companion, not this datacenter client.

System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

Minimum

Minimum system requirements
Operating system A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW PC notes
RAM The client is light. NVIDIA documents a network and display bar more than a local GPU bar

Resource profile

Network demand
The whole product. Packet loss looks like a bad GPU
GPU demand
Decode of the stream on this PC, not the game’s full render

Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

Installed processes
GeForceNOW.exe Main Windows executable

Startup components

GeForce NOW can sit in the tray after a session. It does not need to start with Windows unless you said so.

File locations

Common GeForce NOW locations
Typical install C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\NVIDIA Corporation\GeForceNOW\

File formats

streamed game sessions

Common problems

People update the local driver to fix a cloud session

A GFN blur or queue is the datacenter path and your network. NVIDIA App cannot patch a remote GPU.

Store not linked

You still buy and own the game on Steam or another linked store. GFN will not invent a license.

Getting unstuck

Install from nvidia.com/geforce-now

The official Windows client is there. A “GFN unlock” exe is bait.

Test the network before you replace this PC’s GPU

Support documents streaming issues as bandwidth and membership. A new local card does not shorten a free-tier queue.

Confirm GeForceNOW.exe, not NVIDIA App.exe

Open file location. Cloud client folders are not the local driver companion.

Alternatives

Xbox cloud and other stream services if you do not want NVIDIA’s membership. A local GPU plus Steam if the game should run on this disk.

Official help and downloads

Start with the vendor. Random exe sites are not a support channel.

Related hardware

A stable network and a display. The local GPU is not the one rendering the game. A weak laptop can still stream.
