Messenger
Also called facebook messenger, messenger desktop, fb messenger
Meta desktop chat for Messenger threads. The process is Messenger.exe.
What you need to know
Messenger Desktop is its own app. It is not Facebook in a browser only.
Messenger.exe hosts Messenger threads. A facebook.com tab is msedge.exe or chrome.exe. WhatsApp is a different Meta messenger.

What is Messenger?
Messenger Desktop is Meta's Windows client for Messenger threads. A facebook.com chat tab is still the browser.
If you have never used it
If someone said message me on Messenger, this is Meta Messenger, not Facebook only in a browser. The Windows app is optional. messenger.com in a browser also works. Download the desktop client from messenger.com/desktop. The process is Messenger.exe.
What is it used for?
The same threads as the phone Messenger app. This is not a Facebook Page admin tool.
Voice and video in the desktop window. WhatsApp calls are a different app.
The Windows app keeps pings without a facebook.com tab. The site still works if you skip the app.
Who is it for?
- People whose friends already live in Messenger
- Users who want a desktop window instead of only facebook.com
- Anyone who thought Messenger required the full Facebook website only
Current status
Messenger (2011) is a current chat from Meta Platforms. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.messenger.com/desktop.
How old is it?
Facebook split Messenger from the main Facebook app in 2011. The Windows desktop client is newer. It is not 2004 Facebook poke-only, and it is not WhatsApp.

Common problems
Two Messenger surfaces at once
The site plus the desktop app can both notify. Quit one if that is the noise.
People close chrome.exe to stop Messenger
If Messenger.exe is installed, the browser is the wrong process.
Getting unstuck
Install from messenger.com/desktop
A Messenger plus themes exe is junk.
Sign in with the Meta account Messenger names
A workplace WhatsApp account will not open this app.
Use messenger.com if you do not want a tray app
The website is enough for many people. Facebook Help covers both.
Alternatives
WhatsApp if that is the family thread. Instagram DMs are another Meta surface. Signal if the group moved there.
