ESET NOD32
Also called nod32, eset nod32, eset internet security, ekrn

What you need to know
NOD32 is the search name. ekrn.exe is the ESET engine.
ESET is a Slovak vendor. NOD32 still means the consumer antivirus. Internet Security is a thicker SKU. ekrn.exe should take the slot from Windows Security. Two live engines is the conflict.

ESET NOD32 is the consumer search name for ESET's Windows antivirus. ekrn.exe is the resident kernel service.
If you have never used it
If you searched NOD32, that is ESET's old consumer name. The company is Slovak. Download from eset.com. ekrn.exe is the kernel service. NOD32 Antivirus is the thinner SKU. Internet Security and Smart Security add extras. ESET should take the antivirus slot. ekrn.exe plus live MsMpEng.exe is the two-engine fight. This is not Defender.
What is it used for?
ekrn.exe is the ESET engine. It should own realtime so Defender goes passive.
NOD32 is antivirus. Internet Security adds firewall and extras. Same vendor, different cart item.
ESET PROTECT is the work console. This article is the home NOD32-class install.
Who is it for?
- People who still type NOD32 into a search box
- Users who bought Internet Security and expected only the old NOD32 window
- Anyone with ekrn.exe next to a live Defender scan
Current status
Actively developed. This article is consumer ESET on Windows, not ESET PROTECT enterprise.
How old is it?
ESET dates to 1980s Bratislava antivirus work. NOD32 is the name people still type. Current Windows storefronts also say Internet Security. A floppy-era NOD32 is not what ekrn.exe is today.
Versions
Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.
System requirements
Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

Common problems
ekrn.exe plus live Defender
ESET should own realtime. If Microsoft Defender is still the owner, both products scan the same files.
NOD32 name on an Internet Security license
The window chrome can still say ESET while the license includes firewall extras. Check the account SKU.
Getting unstuck
Open Windows Security and read the owner
It should name ESET after install. Defender still active is the two-engine case.
Confirm ekrn.exe under Program Files\ESET
A random ekrn.exe in Temp is not the Slovak vendor.
Use eset.com, not a "NOD32 keygen" host
License keys from comment sections are not ESET support.
Alternatives
Windows Security if you want the in-box engine. Do not stack ESET on Bitdefender or Norton.

Related hardware
ESET is often lighter than older suites, but a full scan still walks the disk. HDD is the slow case.
